Possible to retrofit double DIN into stock Nav spot?

Hi all, I'm still looking into what Mini to buy & am currently pretty set on an '05-'06 MCS. Many of these have the factory Nav in the center of the dash and I am wondering if the possibility of mounting a standard double DIN Head Unit in it's place has been investigated. With new shallow-mount Carplay units like the new offerings from Alpine, it seems like now would be an ideal time to tackle a project like this, just curious if it's feasible or if the dash is a whole can of worms since it also includes fuel level & some other idiot lights, etc.

The stock Nav space is only about 1.5" deep.

Ah, I see. It looks like even the new Alpine unit is about 3" deep. I'll keep an eye out for a Mini without the stock Nav option, then. Thanks!
