Interior/Exterior Removing mirror control knob?

Removing mirror control ****?
Does anyone have any tips on safely removing the mirror control **** so that I can access the door pulls that I'd like to swap out?

p.s. i just took a closer look and sort of looks like the housing outside the **** might have a hole cut in it, so maybe the control **** will just stay in place when I remove the housing?

Anyone know?
