Just one question . . .

Did you use the plastic-Dip gloss over the white/Black? Or did you just use the color?

I got a "Kit" which has 4 color cans and 4 gloss cans. (I got a few extra just in case too) My local hardware/DIY stores barley carry black.

I painted my wheels this past weekend. Cleaned them up, covered them in three coats of plastic dip, then covered them in three coats of wheel paint from advance auto parts! Came out perfect! Almost an exact color match to my car too!

The sun came out late morning so I decided to give my baby a bath & clean her up, with this being the first wash since I plasti-dipped my wheels white.

All in all the clean-up was about as I had expected, maybe a tad more tedious. I have ceramic brake pads on the front, OEM on the back. There was much less dust on the front wheels, and what was there came off easier. Cleaning the fronts was about as difficult as pre-dipping. Cleaning the back wheels seemed to suck more.

With the factory alloy/polished wheels I'd pre-soak the wheel with spray cleaner then wipe down, but with the dipped wheels I had to spray each arch section one at a time. Also, with the white finish if you have a drip, run, or smear of dirty cleaner on the wheel, it really sticks out.

The plasti-dip leaves a matte finish that seems to be somewhat porous, a surface to which the dirt, grime, and brake dust cling to all too well. I'm planning to redo my wheels this fall & will definitely use the PD Glossifier or something similar, with the intent being to give the wheels a slicker finish that might be easier to clean.

I also put a light coat of wax on my wheels today, which should make the next clean-up easier. That's a caveat to this write-up: I waxed my factory wheels a few months before dipping, so clean-up had been a snap lately. The white wheels were unwaxed til today.

I really like the way my car looks, so even though cleanup today was a bit harder, I hope that with Glossifier & wax (and ceramic pads going on the back at my next oil change), that will get easier. Even if the aforementioned steps only make it a bit easier, the freakishly good look and total uniqueness of BRG/White roof, mirrors, and wheels is worth the added labor.

 

Thanks! Sorry to hear your wheels were so hard to clean! I'd look at advance auto and see if they have a clear coat wheel paint. I washed my wheels yesterday after I painted them this past weekend and it went from a somewhat rough surface to an almost smooth shinny surface. No chips or peels anywhere

 

I will get my Plastic-Dip "Kit" tomorrow. 4 cans of color and 4 or clear. $50. I also got a few extra cans just in case.

I would just like to say, its been 2 months so far. Been on road trips, through car washes, through rough roads with rocks and dirt all over (due to bad weather), through floods and all, and my Plasti-Dip'ed rims are still looking as the did since day 1! AMAZING stuff!

 

I dip my wheels to orange and I putted few layer of glossifier on it!
I use degreaser and sometimes meguiner wheel cleaner to clean the rims. So far the dip still stick to the wheel!
But one important thing is you gotta be careful with tireshine! As it will ruin the dip if you spray on it time over time. I would recommend using sponge or brush to apply tire shine!

 

It looks excellent and also allows to secure the tires from stones etc if you ever want to offer them later.

 

True! And it is very easy to apply!

Nice job on the wheels everyone! I think rac427's orange wheels look awesome on his car along with the decals and orange accents it looks so cool!

Flamewinger, your car looks much better to me with white wheels it just ties everything up. My wheels look just as good today as the day I painted them, I was using Sonax Full Effect to clean them but I ran out of it so I tried some Formula 88 degreaser I had and believe it or not it works better than the Sonax on plastidipped wheels. I have a small electric pressure washer and I just spray Formula 88, let it sit for a minute and then rinse with the pressure washer, no scrubbing! They look like new. It is also much, much cheaper than Sonax, like $3.50 a GALLON! Sonax is $99... So people, if you have a pressure washer just get some Formula 88 and your plastidipped wheels will look like new with no scrubbing at all!

I did the plasti-dip on my wheels but they looked like crap from the design on the wheel. Everyone else did a great job and looks great on their wheels! Props to you all!

 

I've done my wheels twice and I recently removed the dip. I made this video of myself removing the dip. I had 6 coats.. Thicker the better and easier to remove.. I used a spray gun from harbor freight, air compressor, industrial thinner and dip in jar form not rattle can.

Love the video and thank you for sharing. I am going to spray mine as well. I have a question though.

How are you guys painting the bolt holes? Do you paint the rim off of the vehicle or while they are on? How do you get it in there evenly if you are painting on the vehicle?

Painted off the vehicle is best

 

You can need to be able to see that the wheels are getting completely coated.

The trick seems to be to either: have a ton of light on the wheels if in a garage; do it outside in the shade; or do th\\e first few pass indoors, let it dry, then move the car out into the light for the next few passes. (That's what I ended up doing.)

Try not to breathe the stuff too much. Really.

Here's my daily driver (my weekend driver is my 2005 Lotus Elise). It's a Chili Red 2010 John Cooper Works Mini with factory paint instead of the black rubber around the wheel wells.
