Good news. This evening I washed my Mini, and during the wash, I couldn't see my rain gutter marks anymore! After washing -- but while it was still wet -- and doing a very close inspection, I found I could see the outline of the triangles, but *only* when they were in a very particular light.

Also, the part I could feel with my finger is no longer there.

So, I seem to have escaped any permanent damage. Whew!

You guys are right, though, I obviously tightened it too much.

Yeah. I know I used it the wrong way, but I just want as much simplicity as I can get without having to think if I've tightened it too much, etc.

I've looked at the roof caps for the OEM rack, and I'm ok with them, so I plan to have that done. I just wish I could see them up close to see exactly how they mate with the roof, whether there's the potential for marks, etc.

I'll be patient until I can hear some personal experience on that or see it in person.

PS: In the meantime, I've taken solace that I'm getting Ian's auto-up window and garage door opener circuit this week, so I can keep myself occupied with that.
