help with new wheels/tires rubbing rear plastic trim

despite the cold, i couldn't resist seeing how my new summer/track wheels would look. i got them on, they look great, but they rub with cornering and weight in the back

i am about 1.5" lower than stock (bc coilovers). new wheels are 17 x 7 o.z. ultraleggera's et is 37, old tires are dunlop direzza star spec z-1's (215/45-17). i have -1.5 camber in the rear.

no hint of rubbing with the stock wheels 17 x 7 et 45-48 (a mystery!), 5mm spacers and same wheels at the same ride hight!

here's a pic

do i need to raise her? or dremmel the rear plastic trim? or both

if necessary, i was thinking of removing the trim pre dremmeling...any links or info on how to do this would be appreciated!

help!! the dragon is only a couple a months away!!

if it only does it in hard cornering, loads, or bumps...id just let the tires wear the spot down themselves. Thats what I did with my 215/45s...and its looks nice under there. A lot neater than it would look if I was let loose with a dremel. lol

that would be a good use for the runflats which, of course, are on the stock wheels

your method didn't effect the tires at all? my star specs are super soft and i'm trying to milk a couple more track days out of them...i love 'em

I ran my wheels for a while to see where they were rubbing--they leave a nice trace of melted plastic, then dremelled away at those spots. I only rub on hard dips now so there's no need for more treatment.

Whether the wheels rub depends on the tire profile as much as the et.

I think it's because your new wheels are a bit more outwards that's causing the rubbing. Going from et 45-48 to et 37.

This may help to see how much the offset changes things. Just make sure to put the new wheel last:

yeah, the direzza z-1 star specs have a slightly more aggressive profile than my all season runflats too bad the runflats don't rub, i wouldn't mind using them to sand/melt down the trim. for those who don't know, the direzza's are definitely a wide 215...but that's one of the things i liked about them

that is true. i was aware of the offset differences when i did this...i had previously used 5mm spacers...required to clear the front strut bodies of my bc coilovers. so i have a real 3mm difference, which appears to make all the difference in a lowered r52/53. another factor is that 215/45 are "taller" than 205/45. anywho, i knew these issues going in....i just want them to fit! so i will be using dr. g's method when the temperature gets back above 40!
