I tried to put a 3 spoke R56 wheel on an R50 ('03) and although it was capable of physically fitting onto the post of the steering column, their are two plug in on the vehicles volute spring (the thing that the controls from the multifunction switches plug into and then has another piece that allows the steering wheel to turn yet still relay signals to the car's computer) that needs a wider opening to clear.

It also appears that they changed the way that the airbag fits onto the wheel as I had to purchase a new airbag. The old 3 spoke airbag also does not fit into the steering wheel. The actual airbag is too big.

IF YOU CAN'T SEE PICS, THEY ARE IN MY GALLERY - KEEP GETTING AN ERROR UPLOADING

Look at the pictures I attached of an R56 and R50 steering wheel for comparison. The one on the person's lap has a larger opening and looks like only 2 connection points to the airbag, the second, from an R56 (on the tile counter), has a smaller opening and 4 connection points for the airbag. The wheel even looks smaller in the center portion. The last picture is what a volute spring is.

You could possible get it to work if the volute spring from an R56 fits into an older model. This starts to get pretty expensive though just to try it out.

Let me know if you have any questions.
