Finish with 800 grit before you paint.

Is the 800 grit what I should use to remove the existing paint on the bonnet scoop or are you saying that I should sand with 800 grit after the paint is removed?

Use 800 to finish right before you prime and paint.

I have a friend who owns a body shop and that is what he does.

He works mainly on high end cars

don't take the paint off. use something to scuff up the existing paint.....300-400 grit should be ok (careful on the pressure). Use a self-etching primer, then a light tack coat of your black....wait about a minute or two, and then multiple light coats. I used VHT 'Plastic Trim - Satin Black' for mine.

thanks. the hardest thing is dust and patience. to deal with dust, sweep out the area you are working in, blow it out with an air gun too if you can. let it settle back down for an hour. put some wet towels around the area to help keep down on airborne dust and static. put the scoop up on a box...elevated from the dropcloth.

I've done quite a few things with rattle cans and this seems to work the best. dust is a PITA for sure. I've also draped plastic from the ceiling with duct tape, taped a large panel filter over a whole cut in the plastic, and run a vacuum taped to another part. this keeps air moving (you have to breathe!) but the dust down...DIY paintbooth.
