Interior/Exterior what can i use to replace this part?

what can i use to replace this part?
the black mesh under the plastic grills by the windshield vents has deteriorated to nothing on my mini. what can i use to replace this, or do i even need to bother?

i was just thinking about, and wondering if anyone has replaced it with silver screen or grill material, like they do with the hood scoop. it could be painted black if it looked bad and it wouldn't ever waste away like this plastic stuff. i don't mind leaving it open either.
