Interior/Exterior Trouble w/ Autotecnik tow hook
Trouble w/ Autotecnik tow hook
All,
I recently removed my autotecknik (sp) tow hook due to it loosening all by itself. As you all know, it will not screw in all the way and remain parallel to the ground, per design. I had some teflon tape on it but it failed to stay put. How does everyone with this towhook keep it seated? I am looking for any and all known ideas that have been used. Thanks!

There is a locking nut that you tighten once you have the tow hook in a parallel position.
1.) Screw the hook into the hole as far as it will go clockwise.
2.) With a box end wrench on the nut closest to the car (the base) for bracing, turn the hook counterclockwise until it is parallel. It may take a bit of force to break it loose, but it should be possible with just your hand.
3.) Once you do this there will be a bit of thread showing and you turn the nut between the hook and the base clockwise into the base.
4.) Tighten the locking nut with a box end wrench while supporting the base.
Once locked, mine stayed tight for over a year without issue.
Hope that helps.

I have thouroughly examined my tow hook, and I am definitely not seeing any locking nut. I think I might be missing something. I bought this from kenchan. Ken, did you hold out on me?!
I love the way this looks and am sick of it moving around on me...all this time I thought one of my workmates was screwing with me!

Or you can squirt some silicone in the threads. Just use the stuff they use for fish tanks - it's cheap. I used it on my OEM one (which also is at an angle when snugged down) and it hasn't moved in months, but I know I can easily break it free if/when I need to.

Ok, I do not have a real autotecknik tow hook, if thats what SumWon has anyway. I do not have that top locking nut, just a hub that the hook attaches to. My hinge bolts are covered by the hook itself. Kenchan, how did you have this thing affixed securely? I would like to avoid loctite in the event I need to remove it.

Ken! I thought you said teflon tape!! I will reinstall tonight. Thanks. So is this a autotecknik hook or an imitator? I don't care, I am just trying to figure out why there seem to be a few that look the same yet are put together differently.
