I am shopping around for a new exhaust and maybe, possibly going with black chrome depending on price and looks

here is a picture of what black chrome might look like on some tips

I don't know what "standard" paint woud be, but it certainly could be that what I tried did not work, where perhaps some other formula might. I was using auto paint in MINI Chile Red, but brushed on rather than sprayed. I'll try agai, maybe.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I dont know exactly what paint you used but does it maybe require some sort of sealer? a clear coat of some kind?

markldriskill 05-16-2007 12:32 PM

A clearcoat is definitely required. I did not test with clearcoat. Would that affect adhesion to the underlying surface?

Is it just flaking on its own accord? when you said chipping I imagined it meant being struck by something. This would be your best bet to increase bonding properties

Thanks, FS. I may try that.

I believe that what you describe as "flaking" is probably closer to what I saw. I was able to remove the completely dried paint just by rubbing it. It would have easily come off in a car wash, for example, and certainly with any vigorous polishing.

strange. I would say with the adhesive promoter and a clearcoat (which should seal it from rubbing off) you should be set!

cool, I cant wait to see Bandit in person again and see all the blacked out stuff. the blacked out chrome exhaust should look really good

Yea now I just got to get some cash haha. I put in the intake and it sounds nice!

Great idea. Nice alternative to debadging.

sweet, are you coming back on Monday? I'd like to see the intake and blackout job, and you need to rep the R56!

No one has asked yet, but what did you have to do before painting the rear control arms? Hopefully no disassembly :) I've been thinking about doing the same thing.

you can use my approach i used for my brakes.... paint what you see:wink: haha

familiarstranger 05-17-2007 02:54 PM

I used that exact approach. I laid on my belly, took rubbing alcohol and shop towels, cleaned the control arms. then placed some regular printing paper behind the section i was going to spray to prevent overspray and then did 3 coats. i stayed away from any bushings joints etc.

familiarstranger 05-17-2007 02:54 PM

O and yes I will be there Monday for sure.
