Pop off the plastic cover and sitting right in front of you, attached to the intake manifold, is the fuel tank breather valve. Give a listen to it and see if that is where the intermittent tapping...

I think it's about to fail. In my experience the weakest point in the regulator is the plastic clips that slides over the rail. This gets worn out or breaks because of wear and dirt on rails.

Update on my mishimoto aluminum radiator. I've had it in for a few months now and love it. I've had no issues at all. I highly recommend it!
