Drivetrain :: Seafoam Treatment R55/R56

I use this stuff on regular basis(right before my 3k oil changes) and was unable to find ANY videos of Seafoaming a MINI so I managed to throw together a quick video of some past treatments. I can't emphasize enough how useful this product is on the N12/N14 engines with the high compression ratios and the PCV design. I've seen the cylinder heads from these engines after 20k+ and the amount of burnt oil/carbon buildup is ridiculous. You can pick a can up at Walmart or most auto parts stores for under ten bucks. Installing an Oil Catch Canister will also help in preventing sludge/carbon buildup. For you folks who are hesitant for fear of hydrolocking I've done this procedure every 3k for over 85k on the MINI and never had any catastrophic results. You will definitely notice a difference in performance after the treatment.

Motor On,
Chad

Good video. How long does the stuff take to clear up from the exhaust?

Definitely the best sounding MC I've heard. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of that cowl induction you got going on.

A few minutes of revving should get rid of most of the smoke. There's a pic in my gallery of the intake setup.

Oh okay I see how that works. Did you just cut a hole and shove the filter in there or did you remove that whole lining? What temps are you seeing with the filter in there?

I dremel cut the plastic liner and have a small filter tucked behind directly under the cowl vents. When the N14 engine goes in I'll relocate the battery and use the space for a large cone. Temps are at or a few degrees above ambient consistently.

I always put half the can in the gas tank. I don't bother putting any in the oil since I change it every 3k. No harm done if you do put it in the oil.

Thanks. Do I pour the Seafoam into this tube through the left end of the tube so it gets sucked into what I think is the intake manifold on the top right?

The more I'm learning, the more you're becoming my hero, Oxybluecoop. Seems like you highly recommend an oil catch can in our coopers. Do you happen to have pictures of your install? It bascially goes between the same tube for Seafoam?

Sorry for monopolizing this thread with stupid questions, but how do I unclip the hose. I'm afraid of breaking it.

What happens if no smoke comes out? The only thing I think I did different was the car dies when I put the hose back on and I waited 5 minutes instead of 10. But I got no smoke. I drove it about 1/2 mile, still nothing. I think I will go try to start it now (3 hours later) and see what happens.

You can install a catch can on the non-S...it just has to be where the PCV line is that goes from the valve cover to the intake manifold instead of a set up like I have (pictured below) which is on my R56S with the PCV hose deleted. SO to answer your question...yes it can be done.

I did the Seafoam treatment yesterday at 66,666 miles and the engine instantly felt much smoother. I used about 1/3 of the bottle and the amount of white smoke was amazing. Thanks for the how-to!

+1. Great stuff. did it last fall, will do it again before installing the PCV block-off port, which is currently on-order. Install the catch-can and do the PCV block mod and you should see almost no build-up, the only junk left will be oil that sneaks out of the turbo bearing seals under high vacuum. Should reduce 85 to 90%.

Hmm looks like I need to get on this with 47k on the clock! Does everyone agree on 5 ounces into the pipe, let sit, then restart with a little throttle action?

I agree with 5 ounces into the PCV pipe, let sit for at least 20 min, I usually do it for 30, then restart do throttle action until the smoke is gone.

Ok..I'm going to try the seafoam....I'm not a believer..but can't hurt...
I have the R56 S Turbo with 111,411 miles and blowing blue smoke,,I don't have the cats on and no resonator...I thought having the deleted cats was causing the blue smoke...and I'm sure thats what the cat converter does...cleans the emissions pcv etc,. taking the cats out gives a bit more power but does smoke....so SEAFOAM here I come...
