Windshield Replacement
Windshield Replacement
Looking for a place to get the windshield replaced on a 2006 mcs convertible. Does anyone have any recommendations in the Houston area? Let me know if there are places to avoid. I hear the apillar has a tendency to break and sometimes a generic upper molding is used that will cause wind noise.
Windshield is not repairable as the second layer of glass has shattered. It appears a rock was wedged between the two back wheels of a cement truck, or it picked up a rock from the highway and targeted the passenger side of windshield. Glass shattered inside and went everywhere. First time for a Hiuston rock to penetrate the second layer, where all other cracks i sealed myself.
Appreciate any feedback. So far quotes range from 170(mom/pop) to 750(dealer).
Prefer a NorthEast location, but open to all.

hey there, how did you get on?
I was driving north on i45 today and mine shattered at 75mph. Looks like an $850 repair from the dealer, but the service guy implied I should go somewhere else...

You guys have safelite down there. There's nothing 'secret handshake' about replacing a MINI windscreen. Only thing that requires extra care is removing and replacing the outside pillar trim. Mines been done twice at a local Pop shop with no issues...No Mom involved.
Sounds like they all have different taste in what kind of Scotch they keep in their desk drawer.
The one person in town that has more dealings with glass shops than any one else is your automobile insurance agent. Give him a call and he can fill you in on the good and the bad.

So when I went to pick up the car from the dealer, the service guy tried to get Mini roadside assistance to tow the car to my home, since there is so much glass inside. Roadside wouldn't tow it home for free as they only tow to the nearest dealer...
Then I asked him if he had any recommendations for the windshield and he said Safelite, mainly owing to their guarantee.
So Safelite I guess I go. Oh and when I called them back they discounted it down to $389.
So further to this, I called the dealer I bought the car from to get a quote. For anyone interested, if you are shopping for a windshield, my dealer, which is an hour away from MOTW, quoted $560.
So to recap, MOTW $955. Momentum $560. I guess the Woodlands area attracts a $395 "Woodlands Resident" fee?
Hmm pays to shop around I guess.

I still have yet to get mine replaced. Let me know how it turns out. Once I figure out where I am going and get it done, then I will post info.
So I'm back. I went to safelite, it was $389 total. Took about 45 minutes and the guy seems to have done a great job. It's not Mini, but it was warranted against defects. I haven't seen any distortion through the glass, so I'm pretty happy with it.
