Check Eng Soon Light

Does this make sence? BMW stated the an aftermarket exhaust maifold (Headers) that this is the cause of the Check Eng Soon Light to go on and off. Need to put on stock exhaust manifold to get rid of the fault.
The work was done by BMW during a JCW package add on.

I have also been told that the check engine light can come on when using an aftermarket exhaust header with a larger throttlebody or pulley modded Supercharger. The O2 sensor on the header gets ? too hot?

This has happened to me only at the track, not on the street or at autocross.
If I restart the engine 5 times the code clears and the light turns off.

Since I got the upgraded ECU software v.39.2 I have not had any problems with the check engine light.

Ryan - Didn't you get all the stuff from MINI of Hawaii as part of your JCW upgrade? If so, it should be covered under the JCW warranty. Tell them to deal with it as they sold the part, they installed it and they warrantied it!

I might need that software. Or they need to load that software.

Sounds like crack smoking BS to me...

But get or borrow an engine code scanner to make sure. They're available for less than $100, and some people have mentioned you can borrow them from places like PepBoys. If you buy me airfare, I bring it to your door

My SES light has been on since they upgraded the software to version 39.xx few months ago. My SES light now comes on and off all the time. It will stay on a week or so, go off for few days, them come back on. Its been like this for months- car runs absolutely fine no difference when its off or on. I've got miltek header/exhaust, pulley, etc and just don't want to hear Glen (shop forman) lecturing me that whatever is wrong is due to my aftermarket parts. I'm really sick of that.
SES didn't come on before software upgrade unless there was real issue.
I bought the OBDII cable & software to clear and track codes. When cleared it comes back on. I've not determined which code fault i have yet. Perhaps this weekend i'll do it.

My fault code was (0420 CAT). I might turn that into my autocross number.

Hey, that number is kinda close to "43" (me).

From the Bentley MINI cooper Service manual:
Your fault code or DTC (diagnostic trouble code) is probably P0420
where the 4 means it is from the auxillary emission control system.
Your DTC means the problem is due to:
Catalyst System efficiency below threshold (Bank 1) <which sensor? 1 or 2?>

Could it be a faulty O2 sensor on the exhaust header. There are two of them.

I thought that when the light is on that the ECU changes to accomodate the fault which usually means poorer performance?

Converter(BANK1) EFFICINCY BELOW THRESHOLD. That is what they wrote. They are blaming it on the aftermarket exhaust maifold (headers).

OK, if they think the aftermarket exhaust is the cause then they need to replace it since they installed it and sold it to you. Isn't there a warranty and isn't it been less than one year? Did you keep the stock header?

Is it a Mini mania header with Cat?

Same old problem

About three months ago, or so, I had the infamous leaking thermostat on my '09 Mini S. Up to that point the c.e. light never had come on, and did not come on during the duration of the problem. I was constantly putting water, and anti-freeze, in the coolant fill tank, (up to a quart a day), but no light. After I had the housing installed the light came on, then went off, then came back on, then off, etc., etc., etc. It goes off for a few days, then comes back on for a few days. The car runs as well as ever with no problems whatsoever, with the exception of the c.e. light. I've got my motor vehicle inspection this month and would deeply appreciate some insight on just what the problem could be without having to go to the dealer, and spending hundreds of dollars, to find out a screw is loose, no pun intended. No mods except a Maxflow cat-back and a free flow air filter. Thanks, wallymango1

You could try emailing or calling Way at Waymotorworks.com and tell him your problem.
