What if..........
This is simple. Put the lightweight motorers in the H-sport spring modded MINIs and the rest can go in the stock MINIs. Carpool down to the Krispy Kreme store of your choice and order away. Go back to the curb and summon your MINI ride using family radio since the MINIs are circling in counter clockwise figure 8 rotating patterns at odd minute intervals.
If it is in Waikiki we can even drive down to Kapiolani Park and get some good parking spots then carpool from there down the Ala Wai and over to the shop. Then at least we can go back to the park to devour our treasure.

....if krispy kreme is on our next mini cruise. oh damn, i don't think it'lll be here yet.
...if we make our mini cruise a tasty cruise. hitting all our fave spots, including dessert, of course. oh yeah! then in a few months we'll all be riding low. no need lowering springs.
btw, wasn't coco's here like 20 years ago at the corner of kalakaua and king where the jack in the box is now. before that was a&w. and before that was coco's? i heard some stories about that place from my old time patients. the best one was that while eating a hamburger and fries there, a humungous cockaroach dive bombed from the super high ceiling rafters and landed ontop his plate. after checking over the selection, papa roach then flew back up to his dwelling...with a french fry in his grasp.
i guess that's why coco's isn't on our fave restaurants list.

from their website:
It all began back in 1948, with one little restaurant along Pacific Coast Highway in Orange County, California. Today, there are almost 500 Coco's Bakery Restaurants throughout the world, including California, Arizona, Colorado, Washington, and international Coco's located in Japan, Korea, and even the United Arab Emirates!

>>things hawaii is lacking:
>>
>>* krispy kreme (on oahu)
>>* in-n-out burger - not my favorite burger but i love watching the crew behind the counter making fresh french fries and jamming to fill orders --> very impressive!
>>* trader joe's - my favorite all time market!!!
>>* coco's - best free bread with wheels & best chocolate pie
mini-t,
I'd add :
- Wahoo's Fish Taco (this Orange County product is starting to spread slowly......their grinds would fit right in here)
- Polly's Pies (much smaller than Coco's but much better) - I am not a pie eater but I'd fight for slice of their Apple pie (and strawberry pie when in season).
- Tommy's (the original - these chili burgers would harden your arteries but you would die with a smile)

ruby's diner http://www.rubys.com -- yummy clam choweder in bread bowl
just noticed that in my last post, i wrote "free bread with WHEELS instead of MEALS" haha

Yummy Fish Tacos.....I don't know if I hit Wahoo's the last time I was up in Orange County...but the fish taco's were AWESOME!!!
The other thing I miss that we don't have is Taco Time. They're fried burritos are so good!!!!!

Funny thing about Tommy's is, they are ALL located in the "bad" neighborhoods and open 24 hours. You would usually get a craving in the wee hours so you'd really risk you life for a Double Cheeseburger with Chili fires!
Man! This thread is making me miss all of the eateries we left behind!
You also mentioned Ruby's....my daughter loved Ruby's (another Orange County product, I think). Their shakes really were awesome! How about Johnie Rockets! Another great "old diner, burger joint, with great shakes).
Another thing Hawaii needs are great bagel places.

The Coco's in Japan has the same signage but the menu is totally different. I guess the same could be said for Denny's over there too. Whole different menu than in States.

Not sure how "What if.........." turned into a Mexican food thread but I am with you mini-t - we need a good burrito place! How about a Chiptole's burrito! These are huge and awesome. I guess Ozzy Osborne made them famous worldwide with his burrito diet but these guys are good. They look small but are actually a McDonald's company.
Don't forget Pinks hot dogs, a must when in LA!
Tommy's Joynt from SF with their buffalo burgers
Grey's Papaya from NYC
DaKine - No problem going to the bad areas in LA since all of us were packing at the time. It kind of comes naturally for students going to USC. I just went along for the ride.
Actually, I used to buy guns up in Pomona and bring them home and register them here. It's a lot cheaper in the mainland for a lot of stuff. Then there's my buddies living in Oakland with suppressors on their gat. Of course we all outgrew that stage after a friend shot himself in the leg with an accidental discharge for his .38 Chief Special. Oh yeah, he's an atty/CPA who decided to join the LAPD.
Anyone ever notice that the Japanese and Chinese food up there is a little different?
Hmmm, all this talk of guns has reminded me I have an eviction in the morning. Damn tenant's a druggie and a psycho who hates my guts, and owes me 4 months rent! I think I better have some backup this time. Wish me luck! And no, it's not illegal as I'll be packing on my own property.

They were in Mapunapuna!!!! I didn't know that! Yup, I was sad too....I used to hit the one on Wilder....it was in the Texaco that's now a 7-11. I didn't know they were california based until I checked them out on the internet... They're crispy burritos were sooooooo good!

actually the crispy burritoes that they show on their website is different than the original ones i think. the one that i'm talking about is actually a burrito that is deep fried to make it extra tasty. they reminded me of the ones we ate in elementary school

the crispy burritos are kind of like taquitos...but they are not as hard and much flakier. They are like the burrito that mini-t is talking about from elementary school. It's like they use a very thin tortilla to wrap the meat befor they deep fry. But the shape is the same as a taquito. Maybe I'll try to make one. Yummy!
...if we had a good mexican restaurant here in hawaii, where is it?
i thought bueno nalo in waimanalo at first.
then banditos, only because they had good free salsa and chips
then el burrito on piikoi and kapiolani
now i'm into mexico lindo on kahuhipa in kaneohe
now you know they're real deal mexicano, if...they got mexican bottled soda/beer. los tres compadres in wahiawa town center even has the classic coca-cola glass bottles. not sure if they're saved from way back when or if they're made overseas in mexico currently.
once i did find myself in a very mexican neighborhood when i was grinding those krispy kreme doughnuts in riverside in summer '02. in fact, one side of this main thoroughfare led to uc-riverside, and the other side led straight thru a mexican neighborhood. all kine taco places all over the place. and this was just 1 block away from where i was staying, just past krispy kreme. they even had real deal mexican grocery store, where one whole aisle was exclusively tortillas. and something i learned was that real deal tortillas are made of corn, not flour. i would say that 90% of that aisle was corn tortillas.
the clincher that this was a mexican neighborhood was friday night affter dinner when i was driving back to the day's inn...on both sides of the main street lined all the way up and down were young mexican folks, bascially yelling and chanting at their counterparts on the other side of the street, almost like they were cheering/dancing against each other. some had drinks in their hands, which they were waving around as they swayed and danced in place. and there i was driving right down the middle of this in my pontiac rental car. but i must say i never did think i was in danger.

some of the mexican restaurants we frequent in hawaii:
cisco's in kailua -- one of our faves
la bamba on kapahulu
torito's in market city
la cucaracha in waikiki
el charro on sand island access rd
jose's on waialae
cha cha cha in hawaii kai
mama's which is now closed
never been to el burrito but planning to some day
i've heard that azteca is great but havent been there yet - edit on 2/4/04 -- just went to azteca's tonight and it was "okay." thought the food was kinda bland. it was pretty crowded so i guess others think it's great!
and of course, can't forget taco hell -- double decker taco supreme is the sh*t.
but nothing compares to the burritos in the mission and real homemade mexican food

i think food just makes everyone happy  a way to a man's heart (and even women?) is through his/her stomach!
i've never been to the mexican restaurants on the north shore but yes, there are a handful. i think cholo's is supposed to be good. there's also that place that makes the best fried ice cream that's out there....
