>>minihune -- saw a small article on your chess champ son in today's advertiser
Thanks for mentioning it. Two players from Hawaii were among the 2100 players there. We did pretty well. It was also pretty cold in Chicago about 35 in the day and 25 at night. Games ran up to 3-3.5 hours each and there were 7 games over three days.

In the K-12 Blitz tournament that preceeded the regular tournament my son had 7 points out of 10 games good for 10th overall out of 80 mostly high school players. Blitz is 5 minutes for each player thinking time on the clock and you each play black and white color-two games for each opponent and 5 rounds.

In the 7 games my son played (in grade level 7), #1 (based on ratings) and won, #2 and won, #4 and drew/tied, and #8 and drew. He faced the toughest set of opponents in his grade level. Very grueling, we hardly had any time between rounds to catch a bite to eat or rest. His 5 wins and 2 draws was good for 2nd overall. The #8 player (who finished first with 6 wins and one draw) didn't have to face #1, #2, or #4 who were all knocked off from the top boards but she is ranked #2 female under 13 in the world and had just returned to the US from a trip to Greece to represent the US in a chess tournament.

This year we'll go back for the Middle School National Championships and play K-8 in the summer and in December play in the Scholastic Grade Level Championships again.

I don't remember the young man but I think he was about 20 years old.
He beat me easily. We played in one of the smaller side rooms.
One of the two boys was named Bradley.

If that was you then you are a better player than you lead me to believe.
After many years of watching chess I hope I can be a better opponent today.

^^^I'm quite positive now that we did play each other. We played on the right side of the back room in Rec. Ctr. No. 6. We were not on the patio but relatively in the middle of that right side. You keep a poker face throughout while I've got a semi-grin on most of the time. Want to play chess on Tuesday (the 6th) @ 11:00 a.m. at Starbucks, Ward, the one across from Borders & next to Jamba Juice? Btw, in exactly one week, I transform from a night hawk to an early bird. From 3rd gear (1-6), I'll jump straight into 5th. Therefore, this is my final week with extra time. Just say when you can...

P.S. My MINI is now washed (per my post) & perfect once again

How about this thursday 630pm at MINIlani chess club Rec 6?
Tuesday I'd be likely taking my son out to play basketball or doing something with my daughters-since they don't get up until 11am. More Nighthawks.

How often do you play? Do you study the classic lines?

I remember playing you (assuming you are correct-sounds correct to me) but I would say that I was not very good.
Not sure if I am any good now. I do know that my kids are alot better. Back then they were rated about 800. The two younger ones are roughly double that now.

^^^Shucks, I work until 7:30 on Thursday night. What's good for you? Geez, I haven't played in years. Yet to study chess. Chances are, never will. Just set 'em up & play. I'm that extreme type where I'd get into something & go full blast and leave other interests behind. All or nothing, probably... Even bought a computerized board back then

The chess club is there from 630pm to closing at nearly 9pm. You have to come back this way after work, Why don't you come by on your way home. I'll be there until 9pm this thursday if I know you are coming by and you can call me on my cell if you cannot make it. My kids will be there anyway. Besides, it takes until 730 for many of the people to make it anyway. You'll hardly be late. This week is a quick chess tournament but I will be hanging around. Let me know if it sounds like it might work.

Today I have more time in the day. I'm taking my kids to go bowling midday. But at night I'm taking my wife to Hoku's to celebrate our 24th anniversary-how time flys. Give me a call. Wednesday is also possible.

Erik,
You are one busy guy. And you have so many miles on your MC! You'll be out of warranty in no time- then put on that turbo kit from M7! I'm going in slow motion compared to you.

so there were just two teams?

minihune and kbseto - chiefs

vs.

erik808 and minima - rams

both lost in divisional playoffs or 2nd round...so, tiebreaker? total points scored or margin of victory?

rams 23 to panthers 29...chiefs 31 to colts 38

how's about next year? chiefs, chiefs, chiefs!

Amazing.
Thanks for letting us play(off).
I would have liked it more if at least one of our teams made it to the superbowl.
Now I have no team to watch or cheer on.
Oh well.

Many thanks to MINIma and Erik808 for making this all possible and for being our
opponents.

Sorry us folks here in Missouri couldn't keep our teams in the running.
I still sound like a frog from screaming so loud at the Dome. And the sadness has not quite left. Much Mahalo to my Hawaii RAMs fans. Perhaps next year.

Lois

Erik808,
Did you know that Lois and her husband came to Hawaii and visited with our MINI club out at Kapolei right after we completed the 2003 April Spring Fling. That was before Coop Dogg was born!
Hello Lois- we miss Louie. Come back soon. Spring Fling this year is May 8th.

Hi minihune,

Sure wish we could join you this year. Unfortunately Hawaii is not in this year's plans for us. We are ,however, using our time share to send our son & his future bride to Hawaii for their honeymoon in November. They have never been to Hawaii & are really excited about visiting your beautiful State. Aloha to all.....

Lois

BTW- We have a special section at the Dome called "Hawaii Five-O". They are the cheering section for our Hawaiian players. They all wear Hawaiian shirts & leis. I think they also sneak in a mai-tai or two.

That is great news. November is the month we have the Aloha 500, a two day track event at Hawaii Raceway Park on the friday and saturday following thanksgiving.

5-0! Good. That sounds like fun. Every NFL team should have a Five-O section. We are so lacking in professional sports.

I still remember the Honolulu Hawaiians from the World Football League in 1974

Anybody else remember when they played?
