MINI vs Mini. Dumbest thing I ever heard...
I don't know where this caps stuff started, but this is rediculous! Now there's a differece between a first gen MINI and a Mini? Sheeze, why not first gen for the early, second gen for the first new Minis, and thrid gen based on the R56 family of changes....
Anyway, I know it's a small thing, but for the life of my I can't understand the value in the designations that we appear to be stuck with.
And it makes editing articles a total pain in the butt!
What do you all think?
Matt

From my point of view:
Original classic cars (2000 and before) - Mini
ANY newer car (2002+) - MINI
If you want to talk about a specific model, just use the code. R50/R52/R53/R56 and more to come...
Big deal. The name "Mini" or "MINI" refer to a BRAND NAME. The brand name does not change with newer models. A MINI is still a MINI, regardless of which generation it is. However, the brand name, design and intent between MINIs and classic Minis are completely different... hence the distinct capitalization. I think using the two terms REDUCES confusion instead of adding it.
Incidentally, I can and DO frequently edit thread titles to use the correct capitalization. If you create a thread about a new MINI (any generation) and use "Mini" or "mini", don't be surprised if you come back later and it has been renamed with the capitals.
Same goes for MC, MCS, JCW, iPod, eBay, SIRIUS, or any other thing that is supposed to have distinct capitalization.
I'm a stickler for detail, because it's the details that makes the site easier to read and more professional in appearance. I don't edit post content though, just thread titles (as if I had time to edit all of your posts to fix capitalization! Heh)

What's the problem, Matt? They're all spelled the same.
I actually like the Mini vs. MINI designation.

Mustang hasn't become MUSTANG nor
Corvette CORVETTE nor
Thunderbird THUNDERBIRD
and on and on. Mini isn't the first car to do significant redesigns, shifts in technology, or the like.
I must admit due to my own shortcomings in typing, spelling and punctuation, that's I'm particularly biased on anything that requires something as subtle as capitalization...
And Edge, in your post, did you mean to say "a MINI is still a MINI"? because that's pretty self-evident. I think you meant to say "a Mini is still a MINI" or was it a "MINI is still a Mini"!
I'm confused, my brain hurts, and we have no single word that covers them all.

If you need to talk about a specific generation of model, you simply have to say "1st Gen", "2nd Gen", or better still, use the model code!
Let's face it though - the only time you really need to talk about both MINIs and Minis at the same itme (including in the magazine) is when you're talking about nostalgia. So unless you're going "old school", just use the term MINI always (since I'm sure all of your articles are about the BMW-designed models) and be done with it! Problem solved!
stickler
because
fixt for you.
It doesn't matter what color you are. It doesn't matter how you're built. In an attempt to thwart all dissentions between groups I propose a humbling of all letters for all included vehicles, from the first to the last:
mini
No mini left behind.
Yes... yes... it appears you are.
mini
No mini left behind.
Yes... yes... it appears you are.

LOL - DOH! Fixed... permanently.
Hey, I never said I was perfect.
The perils of typing in a hurry at work, when I should be working instead.
Oh yeah, I went ahead and took care of merging your back-to-back posts, shankrabbit.
Incidentally I don't like the idea of just using "mini" because without any capitalization at all, it degrades them all, as though they aren't "good enough" to be capitalized. They are names, they deserve it... or else outsiders might just think we're talking about a word that means "small", not a vehicle brand!Umm... I just searched the page, your post is the only instance of "loose" on the entire page. <--- until this one

The last iteration of the original Mini was a Mk VII
I know, just general rant. People seem to swap those around all too frequently.

MINI=BMW version
Mini=original version(s)
It could not be more simple.
