The IS300 is a large, 4 door luxary sedan. What is the point in competing with a luxary sedan?
First gen IS300 (IS200 in EU, different motor though) has a very good platform and lots of potential to start with. With the right modification, it is one of the most competitive cars in its class. It should be fun to be on the track with.

The IS300 is a luxo-boat. Comparing a large luxary sedan and a MINI makes as much sense as comparing a MINI against a Ferrari
The most fun I've had at DE's was with earlier model Miata's. Seem to be pretty evenly matched with my MC. Had a good back and forth run with a white one at VIR one session, we parked and got out, laughing and shaking hands, back-slapping. Great fun.
I run HS SCCA in the Washington DC area. I face an older MX3, a fwd two door fastback from the 90's with a 2 ltr 6 banger that can rev. Its driver is very smooth and runs HS in the W DC region SCCA. There is also someone driving a Subbie much faster that anyone has a right too. Then there is that kid that grabbed the SCCA Pro Solo running MC. I look forward to seeing all of them and the cars again in March.

it's not a large luxury sedan - it's a compact luxury sedan. In other markets, it's sold as the Altezza and it comes with a screamer of a 2.0L motor and is quite the enthusiast's ride. Not everything non-MINI is a 'boat'

Yeah, I agree. The MX3 and MX5 are fun to compete with. They are very capable cars, especially the "sleeper" MX3 (JDM, V6 engine), they can always give you some surprise on the track.
