Hey I'm a young coop driver. 19 years old, University of Tennessee!
Facebook me: Will Wing I'm in the Knoxville, TN network and the Tennessee network
My parents told me ever since I was a little kid (I've always been a car nut, learned how to read on Motor Trend) that they would match whatever I raised to put into a car, they would pay for insurance so it couldn't be some sports car, either. So when I was 13 I went to work for my uncle during the summer, and various lawn jobs for the neighborhood during the school year and by the time I was 16 I had enough for a 2003 Honda Accord. For a high school graduation present my parents let me sell the Accord, use whatever money I got from it and they would match the money I had raised as a lifeguard (worked two summers there, worst job in the world! ) to buy a newer car. They are still paying insurance so no crazy sports car. I had always loved Minis, and we checked isnurance rates and turns out the Mini Cooper S is actually cheaper to insure than a Honda Accord! Who would've thunk?
So, with help from the National Parents Bank of America, I'm the proud owner of a 2005 MCS.

theWING,
Sounds great! You're one of those who actually worked hard to get thier MINI! I can explain the cheaper insurance rates for MINI....
generally honda accords are more likely to be stolen (depending on your area of course), and the MINIs are definitely SAFER! (I had a hard time convincing my mom of that fact...and I still think she thinks I'm pulling her chain!)

Accords are more likely to be stolen than a MINI? Why is that? Easier to break into and hotwire or something? I don't know which car is safer. They both have 5 star ratings all around. I wouldn't be surprised if the MINI was, though. Much more rigid chassis, smaller space with more airbags. Whatever it is, sure damn happy it is the way it is!

think about who is stealing cars, in general. keep in mind of course, this is merely a few scenarios.
what would you steal? you have an accord, which, first of all, is very common, and easy to find, and, subsequently, doesn't stand out. also, its a honda, just like ya boiz' civics, so there could be parts to be had. also, there probably aren't as many weird electrical systems in an accord, which is probably a good thing but that's another thread. finally, there are a hell of a lot more accords out there, so that alone affects it likelihood of being stolen, simply because there are more. of course that doesn't mean that if there is more of one car A than car B, more car As will be stolen, but it certainly contributes. and im sure it's much easier to unload a cheapo stolen accord than a mini. plus, who wants to steal some "gay ***, slow, piece of crap chick car" as i'm sure they would say. i can tell all the guys in their tc's and Si's think my car is slow, i just laugh and toy with them.
that's my theory anyway. by no means is it fact, but i think it is pretty solid.

I talked to a tow truck drive who was picking the lock on my girlfriend's Volvo (via MY AAA ahah) and asked him what the hardest cars to get into are- MINI's, BMW's, Volvo's. I had to break into an old BMW at work to get the keys out of it- nearly impossible.
I had a 1995 Accord and my insurance is only $200 more a year now (and that's only because my dad got a ticket and a new Acura TL and is on our insurance policy after having had a company car for years).
Well I'm glad to see others are sharing in my plight. hahaha
We should start a new club "Youngins paying off their MINI" with a badge and everything.

Also, having worked on my Accord a ton and working at a Honda dealer, it isn't stamped many times with the VIN #, unlike many Euro cars, including the MINI.
So far I've seen my VIN on the firewall, tranny, boot, doors, and a few other places on my car. On my Honda it had two VIN's- engine and near the windshield.

I work at a Honda dealer too. The vin is all over the place on all the cars. Look at your firewall, it's stamped. The fenders the insides of the doors... they are there, just subtle
as far as the age thing... 22 done w/ college and still paying the thing off lol

i might be the youngest NAM member, actually. i'm 16, and once i get my license (one more month, assuming i make up all my missing drivers' ed classes....im stoked!) and a job to pay for insurance (i have one, but 6 hours a week isnt gonna pay the insurance bill), my mom's 2004 indi blue R50 is mine to keep. although i already act like its mine.

I've notice more lately- but the late 90's and mid 90's didn't seem to have it anywhere- but mine may have been covered by grease and grime. haha
Do you think Honda's quality has gone down? The general consensus at our dealership is that Honda is moving down to GM-like quality/fit and finish. If I have to get in another Honda with black plastic EVERYWHERE, I'm going to throw up.
