I just bought a F57. I am not a fan of the air intake system but I am no tuning expert. It just seems the air has to flow to far through narrow channels to be very efficient. My question is this. How much more gain will I see if I install and after market CAI such as K&N typhoon or some other brand that simply sits where the air box is, vs just replacing the OEM filter with a high flow filter. Is the gain difference with the expense?

If it were me I would try to get one the has an in closed air filter and uses the hood scoop. Just from my experience with my intake, my air temps run a bit hotter because of the filter location and sucking in the engines warm air. Any way to help fresh air to the filter will help, not too mention the fun turbo sounds you gain.

Unfortunately, the F57 does not have a bonnet scoop or the vents on each side of the bonnet. So I am left with working solely under the bonnet. I prefer not use the type that are mounted at the back of the engine because that only takes in air at an already restricted source and do not take advantage of any of the air that gets scooped into the air box from the stock air intake. So I am back to my initial question. Is there a measurable gain difference between an after market CAI and just dropping a high flow filter into the stock air box.

Honestly on the intake side you are best to just use a high flow filter, you won't see power gains with the intake just noise.

If you are wanting gains in power put those funds toward a larger intercooler as they will cool the air charge after the turbo to net real gains

Sorry, apparently I need to catch up on my models. So a drop in would most likely be your best bet, unless you really want to hear the turbo.
