This happened to me too when I changed my struts for some Bilstein B6 --- it creaked like an old wooden ship on low speed turns.
I had noticed that my upper spring pads were quite worn, even slightly frayed on the edges, but I went ahead an re-used them because I had neglected to foresee the need to replenish them so didn't order. I was pressed for time and decided not to wait --- it was a mistake because I had to go back and do the job again just to add those dumb little pads.

Note that the part is 3mm which is BMW's "sport" version which all the R50/R52/R53 series use I think?
Pretty thin really, and likely with high mileage age & wear gets compressed even thinner I'd imagine.
BMW has a "regular" version that is quite a bit thicker at 10mm (part# 31331135589) but use of it on a MINI would raise ride height by 7mm.
