I just purchased a 2015 Mini Cooper S that has Satellite Radio Pre-Wire, but does not seem to have Satellite Radio activated. Is this just a software option that the dealer needs to install or is there additional hardware?

I believe you are correct. If I remember right, you have to pay a mini dealer $$ to activate it. Lots of threads around here about it.

 

It would be a very, very expensive proposition. My car has the basic radio as well, except mine has the Harman/Kardon audio. The wiring harnesses are completely different, and there is no wiring in the center console for the iDrive controller. Also, the actual dash is different for cars with the basic radio and those with the media display, so fitemt would be an issue. There would not be a way to secure the rear of the replacement head unit to the back of the dash. Since many of the diagnostic functions are controlled through the radio (oil level, tire pressure monitoring, etc.), there is not a guarantee that those would work after the swap. Coding would need to be done but sometimes the car’s computer system is unable to recognize features that were not programmed in at the time the car was built.
