Overanalyzing ATF choice

Normal people don't do this. I've invested an embarrassing amount of time trying to decide which ATF do use when I drain and fill soon. I've read numerous howto threads and seen mention of a variety of fluids.

My car is a 2013 Countryman S ALL4 with about 62500 miles. I bought it used in April and have no service history. I feel certain that the ATF is original. The transmission seems to shift reasonably well so the drain and fill is under the heading of maintenance rather than addressing a problem.

The two main candidates are Redline D4 and Valvoline Maxlife. Maxlife has two advantages: it's available locally and is less than half the price of D4. Local availability gives me some peace of mind -- I haven't done this procedure before and it's comforting to know that if something goes wrong I can run to AutoZone to get more fluid. BUT if Redline really is good enough to justify the price, I don't mind spending the money. And, of course, there are other options such as Mobil, Royal Purple and Castrol (though the latter isn't full synthetic).

So what is the collective wisdom of the forum?

I used Toyota ATF, was reasonable price & widely available.

Tranny is shifting fine, as was before the change.

I've been very happy with the Mobile 1 on various other vehicles I've owned.
And will keep using it until something comes along that's more than just a little better. So far, Still using Mobile 1.

Thanks for the input. I ended up going with MaxLife because of strong reviews and local availability.

I think you made a very wise decision. I used to run MaxLife in my Volvo S60 which also has an Aisin transmission that requires T-IV fluid. MaxLife is highly recommended over on bobistheoilguy.com and those guys invest enormous amounts of time agonizing over what fluids to run in their cars. It's a fully synthetic fluid, unlike the Toyota fluid and Mobil 3309. I'll be using MaxLife in my fiancee's MINI when I get around to doing a drain and fill on it, she's just over 60,000 miles now.
