High mileage

How many miles is too many miles on a Mini Cooper r53 I am looking at a 2006 with 170 thousand on it and it still runs good from what I can tell and its less than 2500 bucks other ones I looked at were older in the 145-155 range and were at least 1000 more

I want to hear this one.

I've had a gas driven pickup with 400k on it when I gave it to the kid next door when retiring. He drove it another 75k until he could buy a new one. The kid who bought it was still driving it last I heard. It all depends on the owners maintenance schedule and the quality of parts and fluids in my opinion. Way better quaity than the cars I've owned 40 years ago.

The wear on the engine has more to do with how the owners viewed the type of oil to run, the type of gas (non premium can damage the valve guides) to run and when they changed the oil. The Gen1 engine is the Tritec and has a cast iron block. At 170k the supercharger has seen better days and hopefully the waterpump, crank pulley and clutch have been replaced.

I have almost 283K on my W10 engine. As long as the changed the oil and kept up on the maintenance it should be good. The supercharger and the clutch are the big ones to check out if replaced.

Tensioner was replaced, still on same chain. Due for a timing chain and guide here soon once i start hearing more chain rattle. Right now I dont hear much of that. The W10 seems to last longer on the chain then the w11. Its a more simple and less HP engine. Also, the years of oil changes and using MINI oil, mann filters, and Mobile 1 oil has been good.

+1 on all that. How was it maintained. Weekly attention to details and regular maintenance or drive it and forget it? Major cross country freight services often get near or over a million miles on a tractor. They don't drive 'em and forget 'em.

FWIW, I bought my R53 at 150,000 miles and 12 years old. The previous owner told me a couple of things he did to it: new clutch, fuel pump. Maybe tensioner. That's about it.

But what I really wanted to mention is the value of a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI). I paid $140 for a PPI, and it was totally worth it.

I found that the car needed some attention but was a reliable daily driver. The report they gave me became my to-do list. Plus, I was able to negotiate the price down a little bit since the car needed all new struts and had mushroomed strut towers.

I did most of the work myself. There are still some things on the to-do list, but I have added over 35,000 miles since I got the car 2.5 years ago.
