If the transmission fluid hasn't been changed I would change both the filter and fluid. Then, the fluid about every 25-30K and the filter every other time. The definitely isn't lifetime fluid and other manufacturers who use the same transmissions recommend fluid changes. VW started with lifetime recommendation and then issued a bulletin for changes around 40K. I think they even revised it again to around 25K.

I would probably find an independant MINI shop to work on your car. What are you located? Hopefully someone on the forum knows of a good shop in your area.

New York City. ^

Are independent mini shops cheaper than the Mini dealership service?

Find a good indie shop, that works on Minis and have then change oil and filter and as said before, do it about every 30K miles!

Yes change your fluid.
A good independent/euro shop will be just fine. Make sure they've got decent reviews before hand of course, but most of the time you'll find that the service and price is MUCH better than MINI specific shops.

Here is the deal:
Once it is said, there is really nothing more to say, so why would a bunch of other people say the same thing?
Asking the price is going to be different at very shop and the type of oil and the OEM or aftermarket filter.
Redline is about $16 a quart, the filts have a great variability i price for around $30 to $150.
I don't know how much the OEM oil is, as I only use Redline.

I have no personal experience. But I have heard nothing but good things about Eurotechs in Tempe.
