What the heck is this?

When I went to change the back up light on my Mini cooper S I found this laying next to the tail light on the LH side. Any clue?

It's the handle to manually open the gas cap door. Mine fell off, too.

I have never seen one of those, certainly not anywhere in my 2004 MCS which I have owned since new. Where does it live?

It's in the panel on the left side of the trunk near the left taillight. Came in handy once when it was so cold out that my gas door wouldn't unlock and I didn't have enough gas to make it home. If yours fell off, you should probably replace it.
