2014 MINI Cooper F56
2014 MINI Cooper F56
Just want to share my two cents on the new 2014 MINI and what it has become: http://tommyk154.kinja.com/2014-mini...rev=1372837373
It's no doubt a tough predicament for BMW/Mini. I don't envy their designers at times like this. How to freshen a beloved, already freshened classic?
For starters, when you're talking a retro classic brought into the modern age, you're going to encounter polarized judgement. A MINI is no Ford Taurus or Toyota Camry, those who love this car really LOVE it. We almost worship the brand, we feel strongly about it in any direction those running it take. Most car buyers aren't this way, it's a minority.
I believe BMW and MINI are caving to the pressure of "most car buyers." With no hard research to prove it, a lot of the rumored features in the new Mini are much more mainstream oriented, to say nothing of its outward appearance changes. That's sad, because I love that a Mini doesn't look like average cars out there, it's quirky and a breath of fresher air.
Soooo, you take a car on the market since 07, sold well at first, now average sales as fresher designs come around and steal attention-- as a business you gotta do something to sell more cars. Personally I feel the changes are pretty heavy and cut away from the classic design traits instilled since last century Coopers. This isn't a car that needs to be bigger, heavier and wider- there's hundreds of cars already doing that. Still, to Mr. Joe Public, how do we get him to buy a Mini when he might have gone elsewhere.
I so wish MINI would keep their customer's feedback in mind, and no doubt some of these changes came about thanks to that, but it is obvious that not everyone is gonna adore this car on day 0. I feel VW might already be feeling this with respect to the new new beetle. It's skewing away from their 1999 design.
I will withhold judgement til I see and drive one of these. So get back to me next year :-)
