One family, Multiple Minis?
We have 2 MINIs, 2 Mustang convertibles and a Tundra. So we are an odd household. However we did get rid of an Explorer to get the Countryman S. it hasn't been a problem and when the kids are with us we have plenty of room. We may have to rent a bigger SUV for our summer trip. Teenage girls tend to pack a lot. I drive a MCS hardtop as my daily driver and the hubby drives the Countryman as his daly driver.
Considering it will be 4 people and 2 dogs on a 7 hour trip it would be easier too. We don't get the kids much (they live out of state ) and my step daughter always wants to ride with me. So he probably just would rather everyone ride together cause we don't get to do it often.
I went from 16 years of having a mini can to having a Justa for my kid and a Countryman for myself. My long legged son (36 inch inseam) needed space and though I liked the clubman it didn't have the legroom. So far I haven't missed my van at all. No one is calling me to volunteer to haul stuff and I don't miss that either
My wife has an '08 Clubman S and I have an '04 S Hardtop. Oh, and I also have a '75 Clubman Estate and a Moke. We use a trailer behind either one of the big MINIS when we want to haul something. If we REALLY want to haul something, I can use my daily driver - my employer's 1 ton stakebed.
We're pretty much covered...

I have a 2012 MCS JCW Hardtop and my wife has a 2006 MCS JCW Hardtop. You'd be surprised what you can cram into a MINI with the seats down! We've really had no issues. And with a tarp lining the rear, you can move 'dirty' loads (topsoil, dump trips (side story - you should have seen the looks we were getting dumping two MINI loads of demo from house upgrades at the county landfill!
) etc.). And if you need a little more room, you can remove the back seats in a matter of minutes.
For the money you save by not owning a big 10 MPG truck, you can rent one occasionally for the really big loads. I've done that *maybe* a half-dozen times in 7+ years.
