Break in Period/Style?
Break in Period/Style?
Very Excited! We are about to pick up our 2013 Mini Cooper Convertible S- when we ordered the car, the salesman claimed there were no break in rules.
Is this true? What is the best way to break in these engines, specifically the S engines?
Thanks!

Most critical thing with the S is being kind to the turbo. When you start the car give it a couple of seconds to get the oil flowing before you step on the accelerator.
Most critical is when you stop don't just click the key off. Especialy if you have been driving it hard. The little electric circulating pump that stays on until it is cooled down can only do so much. Under normal driving again just idling 15 seconds lets the turbo slow down and cool, Hard driving I let it idle a couple of minutes.
Be kind to your turbo and it will be kind to you
For break in I just didn't punch mine for 500 miles. Getting the bearings set is the most critical and the only way to strain them is to just punch it.

i dont think "new" engines require break in's like the "older" engines. However, i would "take it easy" for the first 1000 miles at least, then do an early oil change? like at 3k? then dont be too afraid to romp on it, you dont want carbon build up! (as ive read with the turbo minis...)
What does the manual say? The manuals (2012 and before) have always said, take it easy for the first 1200 miles. Not over 4,500 revs or 100mph.
There's also a theory that you should do a few hard, full throttle runs up the rev range (you can stop at 4500) to get the rings seated properly. That needs to be done in the first few miles of service and after the engine is properly warmed up. I like that theory.
