Took a little trip back into time
This morning, Tackleberry ('09 MCS) and I went out for a little adventure. We went to Ft. Pickens State Park on the National Seashore on the west end of Santa Rosa Island. Ft. Pickens was built in 1834 and was active up through WWII. At one time, Geronimo was imprisoned there during his commute to Central Florida. The first couple pics are at the entrance to Ft. Pickens.

The next few pics are at a couple of the WWII Batteries. In the first pic, you can see the gun implacement. The third pic is a Battery at a Group Picnic area on the soundside of the island.

Thanks. We also have another Civil War era Fort (Ft. Barrancas) on the Naval Air Station. There was also Ft. McRae.This fort built in 1836 guarded the entrance at Pensacola Bay, on the west side (Johnson Beach) opposite Fort Pickens. It was heavily damaged during the Civil War and erosion collapsed what was left of it. One of the early hurricanes (1906 or 1916) pretty much destroyed what was left, shifted the Pensacola Pass to the west, thus the remains are under water in the Pass. Just to the west of us, just to the west of Gulf Shores, Al., there is Ft. Morgan and Ft. Gaines. Ft. Morgan is a nice fort to tour.
