What determines a silver instrument cluster vs black?

This is a MINI newbie question but it's been baffling me...
Why do some MINI's have silver instrument clusters while some have black?
Mine has black, and I like the clean look, but the silver is super fun.
Just curious.
Thanks.

The top picture has Nav. Without nav, JCWs have a dark speedometer disk and Justas and S's have silver. I think there are a couple special edition models that have a dark speedo also.

I wasn't asking about the nav, that's fairly obvious. ;-)

Thanks Porthos.
