Solution needed for road gunk on rear window

On my trip up to Vermont and back yesterday I got a lot of gunk on the rear of the car. In particular, the rear window got so crudded up such that I had 0 visibility. I had to stop a few times at gas stations just to wipe it off so I could safely see.

Are there any solutions for this? Do mud flaps on the back solve it or at least help?

Nothing is going to help, it's inherent with all hatchback vehicles.
Mud flaps won't stop it.
Just gotta clean it often.

Rear wiper?

I installed a wing tip and that helps a little. http://autoxcooper.com/Jsart_Mini_Wing_Tip.php

Typical mini issue...
was an old thread called dirty butt syndrome around....was kinda funny...
You can try a few coats of rain-x....
Not enough airflow to truely work, but it will make cleaning it easier......
Just have to live with it....
That is why hatchbacks have wipers....not much help on a cabrio, but just learn to use your mirrors more....

Spicy I have the mudflaps and they don't help much if at all. I have wondered whether the junk is splashed from the wheels and bumper or the top. I don't know.

Dirty butt syndrome is a fitting name.

It's both. The angle of the hatch (or soft top) isn't enough to lead the air down the back from the top, so all the air back there just swirls around.

If there was a clear stream from the top or sides, the airflow would keep everything moving enough to prevent anything from sticking. But there's not, so the dust/dirt/smegma that swirls around (from above and below) has enough time to land on the back and stick.

The wing is not available for the R56 Justa.

Has to be something to change the airflow. Of course the solution might be so hideous that it wouldn't be worth it.

lol....Put your top down. May be a little messy but you'll have clear rear view vision. Or, just learn to use your side view mirrors more.

I think I've seen under-bumper diffusers and heard they help airflow... that might help clear up your window.

Thats what I was wondering about. Seems that a flap or wing on the bumper would have to help. Also on the wing page posted earlier there was a picture of a MINI with a plastic add-on in the back at the rounded part where the glass meets the body. So I wondered about that too. This->

That might work.

Can you use car wax on glass? Would that make it less sticky to the dirt particles?

I don't believe you should use reg. wax on windows but Liquid Glass works great. It's a polish and I use it on my windshield all the time. Bugs and whatever clean right off. Since this rear window issue has come up I think I'll try it on that as well.
It's kind of expensive but goes a long ways. About $25 for a pint. Probably get 30 polishes out of the can.

I wonder if those wind deflectors they used to put on the rear corners of station wagons would work.

Just throwing it out there.

Me? I just wash the back a lot! The rest of the car stays pretty clean.

It was just funny 'cause I remember them back in the 60's or 70's. Always on the back corners of station wagons.

RAIN-X
basicly like glass wax...slikens the glass...makes water blow off..its given purpose...but it also makes it very easy to get bugs, etc off...
the lack of airflow on the rear will limit the effectiveness, but will make it simpler to get the grime off...and help repel some of it...
The stuff just works....2 coats is best for first app...then an occasional new layer...takes like 2 minutes tops. Wipe it on....let it haze, buff off....great on the front, but also on the sides....limits ice sticking during storms when driving in snow!
There are other types....but rainx was the first...some sre better or have more active stuuff, last longer, etc, but rainx is pretty cheap, and a bottle lasts for many uses.

I've come to consider it part of the personality of the car. It's a dirty, messy world out there. The MiNi wears it well.

Looking at this makes me understand why chocolate brown is becoming such a popular color! This was from a recent ski trip into the Pocono's (Elk Moutain as you can tell by the sign) - during storm Nemo that recently dumped all over the North-East. The car was sparkling clean (a 2013 with only 4500 on the odo), but the character of my Blizzak-clad, rubber-matted snow-MiNi really came through with the dirt and grime and icicles. And the best part? It all washed off to another dazzling shine when we got home.

PS - the Blizzaks were incredible - plowed through 10" of uncleared snow straight uphill without a problem!

SpicyMaguro - I have seen the combination of front and rear mud flaps helping a bunch. And they don't look to bad.

I put front and rear factory mudflaps on my Clubman. They reduce the spray thrown up onto the sides of the car a lot, but the back of the car still gets dirty.
