My 2008 fob ring was completely ruined after 3 years and started getting scratched after a couple weeks... Very weird choice to go with chrome plastic. But last month MINI replaced it with the metal version under warranty. Definitely a big difference with the updated version.

 

Right now I am painfully removing the beyond destroyed ring that the previous owner glued on...has to be gorilla glue and he did a horrible job keeping it off the fob in general. So if you sold a MINI sometime this year and did this to me....grrr!
