Do you think of your MINI as a him, her, or ...?
Ladybug is a girl. Sporty, but still a girl. In latin-based romance languages, the term for car is often female in gender. ("la maquina," for example, from The Godfather, right before the Sicilian wife of Michael Corleone gets blown to smithereens . . .)
But then again, the Spanish word for car is "el coche," or "el automovil," (not sure why that is) . . .
anyway, my MINI is still a girl.

Gollum is male. Beyond that it's hard to tell. Certainly a split personality - partially Smeagol and partially corrupted by that dread power.
One Ring to seek them all, one Ring to find them...
Of course Smeagol gets the groceries, and Gollum strives for autocross trophies...
(what has it got in it's glove box precious?)
Best regards,
Charlie

All these responses are so interesting, with some naming and some not. I guess I don't think of my car as male or female, exactly. I haven't named it, but then I've never named my cars.
However, I am still rather attached to my MINI in a way like no other car. That's because it isn't LIKE any other car I've ever owned. My Nissans never made people smile just by looking at them. Too conservative. My VWs, though cute, brought more jeers sometimes than cheers. The Plymouth Duster was so middle-of-the-road, and my (death trap) Ford Pinto I inherited as a teenager was sadly laughable.
The MINI, to me, is unusual because you have the style, personality, uniqueness, quirks that make people smile, and yet the power, handling, road rep, and history that brings respect.
I can't really think of any other car that has all of that. And the memory of hauling my dog and cat out in it to AZ 3 years ago is bittersweet too (I lost them recently), but a great memory made better in a MINI.
And that's what I think about when I pat the dashboard here and there and say "my good car."

So funny - I was telling my other half that I was still thinking of a name for "him". His response was "You sure its not a girl?" I turned to him and said "Tell me ONE thing about my MINI that is GIRLY!" He now agrees that my MINI is a HE.
Now I just have to name him...
I have only had 2 other cars and named one of them (91 yellow geo storm - the roadrunner) so its not just the MINI that gets a name

My first was a him, my 2nd (current) is a she. My first was a tough guy, would do anything I asked, never questioned me. My current one is more finiky, likes to run around topless, definitely a she.
Just off the top of my head I can name two girly thing about MINIs.
1) If you dont buy it the absolute best things(93o fuel in this case) it gets mad at you.
2)if you do something slightly wrong (ie. backwards oil filter) it blows up in your face.

I found out last night she is called Misty. Vague, tough, doesn't complain, but, lets you know you've been bad. She flys a black jack in her hair and wears matching earrings. Take her to the construction site and she steps on nails and screws almost every time and always needs a shower after.
