K&N - How Much Oil to Apply

Just cleaned my K&N for the first time. How much oil do you apply? I know the oil is red colored. I assume you don't want to saturate the thing...so does it need to be pinkish in color? Do I spray both sides? Or just one side? Hope these aren't dumb questions. Thanks. Seth

Don't rush the process. Spray it on lightly and evenly, then wait. You have to give the oil time to absorb. After a while spray some more oil on concentrating on white areas. Do this process until the filter is an even red color. The biggest problem with these filters is people try to rush and end up putting too much oil on. You have to give the oil time for absorption.

yes pinkish-red works. they never seem to be as red as when new...Just dont want it to be more grey, as there is not enough there... i think i usually do something like 2 light coats. ONLY the outside

yes, it's really important to let it soak in after the first coat. i usually do an even coat, but after it soaks in you will notice some gray spots. Fill those in and you should be good to go. And yes, only do the outside.

How do I tell if the filter needs to be cleaned? Should it be blocking out 50 or 75% of the light when you hold it up? Can someone post a pic of a dirty filter that needs cleaning.
