Export my MINI from USA to Spain. Possible?

Hello guys:
I need some help figuring out how to take my JCW 2009 with us to Spain from NYC. Any pointers will help. The car is paid for and have barely used it but would love to take it with to Barcelona by the end of this year. Do I need to make modifications to the car? If any of you has done in the past, how was your experience?
Thank you in advance and of course happy 2010!
David

It can be done, but it is not remotely cost competitive with renting a car while you're there, unless you're there for a long time, in which case, you'd be better off selling and buying over there.

Hello Mark:
Yes its for at least 5 years so renting not a smart option. No its not competitive to sell and buy same car there as not only the model is expensive there, but more importantly the dollar is really weak in comparison to the euro. If I did buy my car there it would cost me shy of 59k US Dollars in todays currency exchange rates.
Scary,
D

Hard to believe it would be that much difference. In any event, you would sell it back after five years so I would think you'd recoup a good chunk of that.

In any event, I just did a quick search on "car import usa spain" and got quite a few hits and companies providing services in this area. Good luck and enjoy your trip abroad. Barcelona is a very cool city.

Is your question about shipping it? Registering it? Getting it past their version of motor vehicles checks?

There have been a few threads here on NAM already related to this (here). I brought my US-spec'd R53 from Germany to Hawai'i a little bit ago, so if it's just a shipping issue, I may be able to help with ideas.

One reason for the $59K cost may be Import Duty Tax, which they would levy on your car upon import.
