I think it is great to find what you like and stick with it.
I tried to live by that motto -- until she hit me with the restraining order

It'll be hard for any MINI, no matter how good, to replace popular affection for the first gen car....simply because it was first. That seems pretty much a given to me. I mean, how many of us still have a soft spot for external door hinges on the classic? I do have to admit, though, that I liked the second gen Cooper from the moment I laid eyes on it, and that has probably colored my perception all along. The more I learned about the level of detail paid to the redesign the more I liked and appreciated what was accomplished in the car. So, yes, I'm a big fan overall of the next gen Cooper for many, many reasons, but doubt I will ever lose a certain amount of sentimental affection and respect for the first gen car. Mine was an early '03 IB/W.

I'm a bit biased...

As an owner of a 2006 MCSa I've got to admit being a bit biased - but overall I'd have to give a nod to the first generation. There are several styling elements I prefer with the second gen version but I don't care for the instrument console on the new generation.

Bottom line though - they're all MINIs!

Gen 1 is the Mini the designers wanted....

Gen 2 is the Min EuroNcap and the bean counters wanted...

I'll stick with the designers thank you...

i like them both, but I think Gen 1 looks better. Gen 2 looks great lowered with JCW as previously stated.

Actually I completely agree with this statement. Without aero kits I would choose a gen 1 car.
