How can you tell when...
At freeway speeds, push the clutch in, give it lots of gas, pop the clutch, then watch the tach while staying at wide open throttle. If engine speed quickly drops to match vehicle speed, the clutch is grabbing OK. If it takes a while, or engine speed increases or runs to redline and vehicle speed is not matching engine speed, the clutch is slipping. If this happens after a test like this, you will probably smell the clutch burning. I do not suggest doing this often, but it is a pretty sure way. Chances are you can probably tell that the clutch is not holding properly by just driving the car aggressively, as engine speed runs away from vehicle speed, then slows down to match vehicle speed when letting off the gas. I say freeway speeds because at slower speeds, the slippage will be less obvious as the car will accelerate faster.
Easy way I know of is with parking brake on tight, put in 3rd gear and apply enough gas like you would if you were starting from a stop sign.
If the engine dies, which it should, your clutch isn't slipping. If you can rev with the clutch out...slippage is occuring.
DON"T DO THIS with people in front of your vehicle or in your garage with the door closed etc etc.
That's how I always checked for worn clutches.
