No MINI Oxford Tours this Summer!
I'm heading to England this summer and as a proud new owner of a 2007 MCSCa, thought the family would take a day trip to Oxford to get a tour of the Mini plant.
Received back the following from Mini (bmwgroup):
Other feedback from Mini:
Please take note of the following more general information regarding our plant tours:
Received back the following from Mini (bmwgroup):
Thank you very much for your interest in the MINI visitor program and congratulations on your new car
Unfortunately, plant tours will pause from 15 June 07 onwards due to preparations for the launch of the MINI Clubman, We will resume tours later in the year though, and we kindly ask you to contact us again in late summer if you are interested in a plant tour in late 2007.
Seems surprising that the whole plant will be shut down (or so this implies) as they retool for the Clubman. What is going to happen to anyone that doesn't get their car built by June 15?
Anyway, for those that are interested (I'm guessing that it has been covered before, here are additional details of a tour: Email address to inquire about tours: Oxford.Plant-Tours@bmwgroup.comOther feedback from Mini:
Please take note of the following more general information regarding our plant tours:
The tour takes approximately 2.5hrs
We generally charge a fee of £7, whereas students and pensioners have to pay £5
A booking has to be made prior to the visit. After requesting a possible date, we send you a reservation for the tour, asking you to return a questionnaire that serves as a confirmation. As soon as we receive that questionnaire you be provided with a final letter of confirmation from our side.
We normally plan three month ahead and recommend to book at least two months prior to your desired visit date due to the popularity of the tours. To make sure that tours do not fill up too quickly we cannot make any exceptions (not even for groups or overseas visitors)!
Due to health and safety reasons children below the age of 14 are not allowed on site
People with heart pacemakers will not be able to join a tour as our robots can interfere with the pacemaker
Visitors should wear comfortable shoes for the tour. No open-toe shoes, sandals or high-heels are permitted.

It's not that the whole plant is shut down, it's only some areas but work will move around - I guess it's simpler to just stop tours, than try to plan tours around the retooling work. Good for them, not so good for you.
Toured May 23rd
I just got back from a trip to Oxford, the tour was awesome, sorry your going to miss it. A good reason for a second trip. One thing to note, England is very expensive. 2 Dollars to a Pound!! They actually had an area that they were beginning to build Clubmans, but we were not allowed in that area. I tried to catch a glimpse, but was not able too. I have some pics of the outside of the factory and the visiter center I'll get posted soon.
omg!! i just emailed them today about scheduling a tour for early July while i'm there. guess i know now what my answer will be. that seriously puts a damper on things. i was looking forward to that for like 6 months

Last time i went (oxford is a 2 hours plus journey from me) they said they are hoping to get a area where you can watch them paint the cars maybe next year.
