MINI Cooper Safe?

I just asked a question about Mini safety on another thread.
I found this link comparing a Ford F-150 to a Mini in a 40mph offset crash test. Keep in mind that this is from 2002, okay?

In another Mini forum that I used to visit a lot, there were a few people who had had major accidents in their Minis and I was shocked at just how tough and safe these little cars are. A lot of people see how small it is and think 'death trap' but they weigh more than most small cars and are amazingingly rigid and protective from what I've seen - thankfully not first hand.

F150 is much approved. MINI does very well in its class ... but again, against a larger, heavy vehicle ... the IHSTA ratings (most of them) are within a class. Check out the testing website for the latest reports.

they are very safe. i have an 02 MCS and i T-boned an 87 civic when they ran a red light and other than a small bruise from the airbag i had no other injuries. We were both going about 45-50 in our direction when we hit, no brakes were really hit since they came out of nowhere (they had been drinking and it was about 1am). on the plus side the MINI beat the S**t out of that civic but it also put her out of commission for four months. They are very safe, we hit hard and fast and other than the initial shock i wasnt injured nor was my passenger.

Gee . . . I just bought my sona 99 Saab thinking his 87 Honda wasn't safe enough (no anti-lock brakes, no air bags, a lower standard of safety overall in 87). What did happen to the other guy?

I have only had my MCS for a short amount of time bue i have been very impressed with all that MINI has on the car to make it as safe as possible.
Fords arent the best vehicles as far as safety anyways. One of my friends was recently involved in an accident in one and if it wasn't accept for the fact he was thrown from the car he would have been dead.

Did you see this thread about the R56 that was hit by a Honda going 110 mph, then T-boned by the cop chasing the Honda?

Wow, great thread Robin. The more I see of Mini the more I'm impressed and the less I think about the niddling problems some people have in them. That Mini died a hero.

Oh, and about the Saab blue bonnet. I had an '86 9000 turbo (had over 100,000 miles on it when I got it in 2001) that was the second favorite car I've ever owned. Saw a special on them a while back of why Swedish cars are so tough. Apparently they're designed for the many car vs reindeer accidents in Sweeden - no kidding. They do a lot of damage and people had to feel safe in cars to overcome that obstacle.

Per my previous thread (rear ended), I'll testify. The woman who hit me w/ a '77 Volvo 242 (small tank) while I was completely stopped behind an SUV was going at least 35 mph, maybe more. I was launched into the SUV, I actually ping-ponged back and forth between the 2 vehicles at least twice, the entire front of the MINI came in along the crumple zone at least a foot to a foot and a half, and I got out dazed w/ a bit of a back ache and headache, none the worse for wear. The MINI is being fixed and will end up costing between 8 and 9k for repair, but was not a total. No air bags deployed, due to the initial impact being from the rear. Trust your MINI.

Not really on point, but as one with experience in the realm, NEVER say it "came out of nowhere" in a lawsuit. Since most things don't come out of nowhere, the legal translation of that statement is "I wasn't paying sufficient attention."

Hate to double post in the same thread, but I love the pic of your family in the MINI. As a Grandmother, I feel perfectly safe to place my grandson in the back of my MINI in his carseat. I'm glad that you feel the same way with your youngster.

and they did actually...it was around a bend so theres a bit of a blind spot and they came around too fast and i had not expected them to run the light since it had been green for me a long time by the time i got to the intersection. Anyways, it was the guys fault and he admitted it, there were also a few witnesses on the street from the bar who saw it happen.
