That probably depends on the type of autocrossing you're planning to do. If they're local events without SCCA affiliation, you might get away with pretty much any helmet (my local club is that way.)

If you're running SCCA events, you'll typically need one that meets the three most current Snell helmet ratings. You can ask the SCCA people at http://www.scca.org/inside/index.asp...eference=staff

I think you mean Snell certified. Bell is a manufacturer, and an expensive one at that. You don't need a Bell helment, you need one that's Snell 95 or newer.

Yep, I saw the error and fixed it just before I saw your posting about it. Thanks for pointing that out though.

autoX helmet

There has been a lot of discussion lately
regarding helmets on the autoX sites.
Apparently SCCA will be recommending
OPEN face helmets for cars with working
airbag systems. The rule revisions are
due to the closed face chin guards being
forced up by airbag deployment causing
broken jaws. I think ( not sure ) that
M rated helmets are okay but you should
spend the extra for a Snell approval. A
well priced selection is available from
soloracer.com. My own preference was
for the G-Force open face with the wide
opening. I wear glasses and tight helmets
are tough to get on. Make sure it FITS
properly. Helmets are a lot like car
insurance, you hope you don't need it
but when you do you're glad for the
coverage.

From the rule book
4.3.1 Helmets
Helmets meeting the following standards must be worn while on
course: All helmets meeting the current or two immediately preceding
Snell Foundation standards (SA or M) are acceptable. For 2003 this
includes Snell 2000, Snell 1995, and Snell 1990. FIA approved
helmets which are acceptable for use in Performance Rally events are
acceptable for Solo II events. See Appendix G for Kart helmet rules.
For maximum protection, helmets must fit securely and should provide
adequate peripheral vision. The chin strap must be securely fastened.
Loaner helmets should be available to vehicle occupants not having
their own.
