I know that SPORT Mode changes the throttle mapping and reduces the power steering assist. However, I have also heard that it changes the thermostat so that the engine running temperature is 180deg. Does anyone know if that is true? It doesn’t seem to be the case on my car...

Yep, i have seen it happen and tracked it with my phone and onboard computer. On my JCW it dips a bit but it runs hotter.

I have a P3 Multi-Gauge and the oil temp is usually 225-230. SPORT Mode doesn’t seem to make a difference, one way or the other...

No computer is capable of altering a purely mechanical object like the thermostat .
That said, your Sport Mode (?) is not capable of changing the running temperature through the thermostat.
You gotta think smarter than your car...

My error.
First I didn't realize that I was in the Gen 2 section. And two, I did not know that the thermostat was electronically controlled.

Well, the 2nd gen thermostat is actually
electronically controlled.
its not just mechanical like the r50/53.

I always drive in Sport mode. It’s either Sport mode or p*ssy mode and I’m not a p*ssy. So MINI should have just made it one mode.

When I picked up my 2009 JCW Clubman a little over a year ago, I felt the throttle response in the first 10% of pedal travel was twitchy in normal mode and very twitchy in sport mode.
After getting used to it, I recently tried the sport mode again and found it more tolerable.
The power steering assist is slightly less once you get up to about 40 mph or higher, which is nice.
I don't notice any difference in steering feel below that between normal and sport modes.
It is a little bit of a pain to remember to turn it on every time you start the car, however.

I use the SPORT mode occasionally, but I’ve never really liked it. The problem is that you have to be quicker on the clutch to avoid a lot of slippage (and accelerated wear). If I’m just cruising around through town, it doesn’t make sense to do near bang shifts to keep the slippage from happening. I would have to think it hurts fuel mileage a bit also.

The temperature change only to the LCI models in sport mode, all pre lci models have the normal temperature of 225-230. At least that's my understanding...

I have heard about the sport mode temp change too. But when I tried to verify it, I realized that my Countryman wasn’t playing along. Like sub3622 says above, it’s only newer models. When I got a tune from Mariokart, the operating temp was lowered to around 195 degrees F. The thing I like about doing it this way, is that is the temp now whether it is in sport or not. It changes the shift points for the transmission to be more aggressive as well (for autos), and stiffens up the suspension, of its equipped with the active sport suspension. I prefer driving in sport mode! The throttle response is better, the turbo seems to spool a bit quicker too. And on top of all that, you get the pops & burbles!

Most of my driving is done in medium traffic, or maybe slightly less. SPORT mode doesn’t make a lot of sense in that context. fJCWs make the additional sounds anyway, it’s just that SPORT mode adds to the frequency and volume. With a 6-spd manual, I’m the one that determines shift points...

After several days of sport mode
(see 5 posts up), I’ve decided to
go back to non sport mode.
JCW burbles and pops the same
either way, and manual trans and lots
of stop and go driving makes the
twitcher throttle response just not
worth it.

You do realize that in SPORT mode the engine isn’t developing any more power than when it is not in SPORT mode?

I call bs on this as I see 14.9 lbs of boost vs 13.5. Have scanguage.

1. start car
2. hit sport mode
3. turn dsc off if dry
4. Seat belt
5. have fun

Yeah that’s BS that you don’t have any more horsepower. I trust your scan gauge. I’ve been driving sport mode for years and there’s totally a difference in horsepower versus non-sport.

Something wrong with the person who turns off the sport mode. Buy a Kia.:razz:

LOL. Agree! I set sport mode before I back out of my garage, as part of the start up process, and I can tell it has more horsepower, without using a gauge. 😊

I was told Sport mode activates the oil squirters for the pistons.

Sounds like as good a reason as any to run in Sport mode anytime youre going to be hot dogging it

No, it doesn’t. All it does is give you more throttle opening for the same pedal movement. Remember this is Drive By Wire. There is no mechanical linkage. Being quicker with the gas pedal gets you to the same place. If what you say was true, it would reflect in the published power ratings, but it doesn’t...
