When can i hit sport mode for the first time???

I hit 1300miles the other day and want to know how much longer until i can pop that sport mode button down....????????

Getting a little excited...lol

sick...now should i wait until i get my fresh new oil change next week...or can i open it up now?

OMG......like when you start the car.........you didn't have to wait for the break in period. Now go out and have some fun!

im right around the same mileage and have also yet to hit the sport button

You can hit the sport mode as soon as you drive off in the car. If you have an automatic, though, while it's still okay to use it, you may want to watch your revs as sport mode will modify your shifting points.

The sport button has zero affect on break-in. All it does is remap the throttle and change steering ratio. Break-in limits you to max revs and speed. Turning the sport button on doesn't change that.

The sport button has zero affect on break-in. All it does is remap the throttle and change steering ratio.
That may be so but if you arn't paying close attention, with the sport button "on" you run the risk of quickly revving over the 4,000 breakin revs. SO I would wait unless you want to watch the tach. The dealer then told me to add a 1000 rpm every hundred miles after breakin.

Oh come on! It's not that dramatic. Sport button or not, if you hit 4000 RPM without realizing then you must be numb and deaf. Having the sport button on isn't going to make to accidently rev it up anymore than having it off will. I drive with the sport button all the time and it does not have the effect you claim.

Oh come on!
Well I am not really numb or deaf, with the sport mode on I pay attention more on the raod than the revs. It is just easier for me to get the car over the 4k mark in sport mode. I took the Skip Barber Performance Racing course on the Laguna Seca raceway and when I am performance driving I pay less attention on the revs and more on the drifting as long as I wasn't hitting the rev limiter.

Took delivery of my JCW yesterday. It has yet to be driven with the button OFF.

Seriously, there is no need to deprive yourself of the sport button. Make it a good habit to turn it on immediately after starting the engine.

I've done HPDE schools too (up to Advanced run group), including the BMW 2-day M school. So sorry, but I call B.S. on the claim that turning the sport button on makes one more prone to overrev during break in (well, maybe you, but not in general). It's just not that dramatic a change, even on the factory JCW, and by the time you hit 4K RPM the car is giving you plenty of feedback that you're starting to push, regardless of looking at a tach or not.

Not to mention, it's not going to kill the car to rev it higher than 4K now and then during break-in.

The only time I consider not running the sport button is in very slow stop-and-go traffic, and even then I usually forget to disable it and am fine.

Does it matter at what speed the sport mode is enabled? In other words does it need to be below a certain speed (or RPM)? Similar to switching a vehicle into fourwheel drive mode.

No, Turn it on when you want. If the throttle is down it won't engage until you lift.

The benefit of doing a soft Break-in is not based on any good data. There is actually some evidence that a hard break-in leads to better performance and tighter tolerances, less oil consumption, etc. Varying your engine speeds is the most important part of break-in. If you rev over 4000 regularly during break-in I wouldn't lose a minute of sleep over it.

And for you guys who have waited for over 1300 miles to even push the sport button, that is really kind of sad. Did the dealer tell you not to use the sport button or something?

I agree, i reved over 4000 a few times while in break in, not on purpose, just was having too much fun to realize it. I hit the sport button my first week, and i love it.

Do you mean you can drive a R56 without sport engaged?

For me, the start procedure is plug in the key, foot on the clutch, push start button and push sport. I prefer the feel of the steering and the faster throttle map with sport on.

Revs does not make much difference and I don't think there is any amazing increase in power, just a little less pedal movement to get there. Its not like it is nitro boost or anything.
