coolant or a/c trouble

My fans are working and the heat is working, but a/c is not getting cold. Assume it needs recharge and wondering if this can be done on our own and not with mechanic.

You should first try to find the leak. If it's a big leak, then a recharge won't last long, if it's a small leak it might get you through a season. Look for a leak testing kit.
