2020 Digital Speedo?

Starting to see more videos of Coopers (Electric and JCW GP) with the new digital speedo. Do you think we could order that OEM part and install it on a F56? Any clue on where to order this OEM part?

I'm a fan of the digital Speedo. On my 2015 F56, I could select a digit MPH display on mine (which I did). Small numbers than what is shown on the 2020, but still quite useable. My 2019 has the HUD and displays my speed digitally on it. I have not played with the speedo display on my 2019 to see if a digital readout is still included as a option.

Yes, it's starting to pop up as a retrofit. There's someone on Instagram that fitted the GP cluster to their F56 and shows all the functionality. If I'm not mistaken, all 2021 models (which are on their way to the U.S. as we speak) will have the digital cluster. Retrofitting the 6WB clusters (the option code for the digital clusters) is pretty popular in the BMW world, and as I understand it the coding is basically the same (replacing the factory option code with the 6WB code, and a few other relatively simple steps). I definitely plan to explore it once the non-GP3/SE cars start arriving with the digital clusters.

Had no idea Mini finally got a nicer digital cluster. I will be ordering one of these babies nad retrofitting ASAP! Have done 6WBs on my BMWs before

Anyone got around to doing this retrofit? Can't seem to find any information online!

Not all 2021 cars have it. In order to get it, you must have the 8.8 inch central screen (Nav XL). Cars with the 6.5 inch screen still come with the analog kombi (gauge cluster).

I have my GP3 KOMBI on-order from MiniPartsDirect.com since 7/7/2020. ETA is 1st week of August 2020. Once I receive it, I will be installing and coding to the car. I currently have a 2015 F55 with HUD & retrofitted NBT EVO 8.8 Navi w/ touch screen w/ CarPlay (upgraded from NBT 8.8in non-touch). I would expect this is as easy as changing the build-date in the VO, adding 6WB, and VO-Coding the KOMBI ECU with BMW ESYS.

I'll post results & instructions once I get the part & install. I expect the install to be a straightforward direct swap, given I have HUD & MOST Cable should be present already.

Did you get around to reading this thread here, https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...l-display.html

varma1986 07-24-2020 05:35 PM

The retrofit is possible. The install is simple & needs some coding. The unit is selling for around 1200 US$ including install & coding & support at Malaysia!.

Is it possible to personalize the new display? ie, place the tach in the middle and speedo on the outside, replace fuel gauge with Nav info, etc.

Thanks Gary

We will look forward to your post and the steps of coding.
Can u share the part number please?.Thanks.
How much does it cost?

coding will be posted once I get it and install it. Hopefully only another 1-2 weeks before I receive it

Thank You.I appreciate.
As far as hardware is concerned, it must be a simple plug in, is that correct?.
Should the BimmerCode App help with the Coding or would we need to go to the dealer to upgrade?.

varma1986 07-28-2020 05:02 PM

Do U have/Can U also post pictures of the rear of the part, please?.Thanks.

No guarantee it is a simple plug and play swap. You will need MOST optical connection from HU_NBT2 EVO if it is not already present. If you have a HUD, you already have a MOST connection.
Do you have NBT2 Navi already? It is required for this "upgrade"

The install of the 6WB will be a simple unscrew old one, unplug 3 connectors, plug connectors into new KOMBI, install & screw the 2 screws back in to affix to dash

You CAN NOT complete this type of retrofit with BimmerCode APP. That thing is an unreliable piece of trash that constantly crashed and corrupts ECUs (atleast the 5 times I have tried to use it and be lazy and not go get my computer to make simple FDL changes). This type of retrofit will require ESYS & PSDZDATA Lite. It requires changing the Vehicle Order to adjust the build date to 0320 (in my case since i have an 1114 build F55 pre-LCI) and add 6WB to the options list & then should be as simple as injecting a CAFD to the DKOMBI and VO_Coding the DKOMBI ECU. The HU_NBT2 EVO should be properly coded (in my case since I have a HUD) already for MOST data, but if not will require kombi high in kombi_cic and Externer_MOST AKTIV (credit to minicooperjp).

My 2019 MINI CountryMan F60 does not have Navigation & also does not have HUD(Heads Up Display).
Can U advice if this will fit/suit?.Thanks.

Yes, photos will be posted during my install process, once I actually get the part. It is in-transit from Germany.

varma1986 07-28-2020 05:13 PM

Scary!!.Thanks for the info.

It will require you to retrofit the HU-NBT2 EVO Navigation system first, as well as buying a MOST cable and connecting from the back of the NBT2 EVO to the back of the new KOMBI

The retrofit can not be done with what you have in the vehicle as it exists today.

It's pretty easy actually. Once you've done it once, you'll get over the fear :) The cluster is just another "screen" that will unscrew and unplug. The EEPROM holds the VIN number nad last mileage. As long as the actual true mileage on the vehicle is HIGHER than the KOMBI, the KOMBI will adopt the "new" mileage from the car. If you try to put a KOMBI in with HIGHER mileage than the true mileage on the vehicle, you will get a permanent red tamper dot on the KOMBI and will need to have the EEPROM viginized. It is a good idea if your vehicle is still under factory warranty to save the original parts, and reinstall these before you bring the vehicle to BMW/MINI for service, as they will get hard-stop errors in ISTA when they try to program the car with modules that "don't belong" per the Vehicle Order on the ISTA server.

I have retrofitted a 6WB to my previous BMWs (F10 & F34) ... so i would fully expect this is the exact same process. I would imagine that this new F55 6WB will have the newer EEPROM that can not be cleared, so it will ahve no resale value when i sell the F55, however this 6WB was "only" $500 bucks where the BMW ones cost me over $1500 each ... but I was able to get a local guy to clear the EEPROM on the 6WB after my lease was up. I reinstalled the original 6WA clusters and sold the "virgin" 6WB for $1000 on ebay.... so this is essentially the same thing ... net cost of $500

I just want to say. How did you come to the conclusion that you have to have an nbt evo? On other forums ppl with id4 evo, id5 evo, and even old nbt 2015-6- fitted the digital speedo

by the way the hud also fits on all LCI cars with entrynav2 since Tgere is no evo fitted anymore since 2019

Maybe only users with enrynav are unlucky but we will have to see.

coding should be simple.
1. Add 6wb
2. change date 0320
3. Insert Cafd
4. code hu and kombi
5. correcting some coding in the headunit since 0320 can cause unexpected fdl coding, like drivermodes changes to the central Console rather than under gearliever, or in my car that it thinks it has an ATM. On cars without HUD, maybe some extra fdl is required yes, but 6wb in VO and the date should do the trick mostly.

At first I did not like the look of the digital cluster but then I saw more pictures and videos of it in use and it grew on me.
- The price for the part is not bad at all, I would have expected it to be a lot more money.

My MINI is an '19 F56 S Iconic Trim and does have the HUD and Navigation.

It would be great if the digital cluster could be installed then a quick software update rather than coding it (I don't know a lot about coding MINIs)

I got ambitious and installed this on my 2017 F56 JCW.

Thanks to Ndal for the coding work. Everything seems to be working perfectly.
