I watched the bar go all the way to the right, and 100%, but I interpreted this as a percentage of the measurement, NOT a percentage of the oil level. In other words, even though the capacity is 5.3 quarts, 5 quarts filled it enough to give me a "100%" readout.

Am I missing something here?
I have no idea. All I know is that any measurement of my '15S or my '12S had to be done at operating temperature. And, i guess you figured out that the new S engine holds 5 liters, not 5 quqrts.

Yeah, but he put in 5 quarts of oil, not liters. In other words, 5 liters = 5.3 quarts, so logically it should not show as 100% full if only 5 quarts were added.

Deb,
I can't go anywhere from here. My '08 had a great dipstick. My '12 had a dipstick that was useless. My Audis have the computer readouts and I like them and I like the new MINI's system. My new car shows "low oil' when cold. It shows normal when the oil temperature raises to normal operating level. When I fill up with gas, I have been checking my oil comsumption ( nil), and everything is ok.

Wouldn't be the first time a car comes out of factory low on oil.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but when you check the level, after it scrolls across to 100%, on the right side of the screen (XL screen) there is a vertical green bar that shows the level of the oil. It's very faint and easily missed. So far my green bar shows oil at the max level (2100 miles).

Oh boy--I DID miss that! Thanks for mentioning it. When the car's warmed up tomorrow I'll check it again and look for it. I really didn't understand the point of doing a countdown (the 100% part), and then having no more information than the "oil level okay" I could get without any wait.

Off to the dealer tomorrow. According to the 'one minute' oil check we are full.

US dealers always put in 5 quarts. 1 qt=0.95L. So if they put in 5 quarts that is 4.75 Liters. I think the R56 capacity was 4.5 qt, but they still put in 5. No biggie.

Good to know. And yes, I did measure again today, and found the little green line becky mentioned. Seems that it could have been a little brighter or better displayed. All is well...

Got the "low oil" warning at 1700 miles after my first oil change. Brought back to the dealer and they topped it off. They didn't see any leaks. They said there's a brochure that explains that these engines can burn oil that quickly (I call b.s.). It just happen they do not have a copy anymore when I brought in my car.

How many more miles have you driven since then? I agree with you on the b.s.

And my dealer said: No codes found, oil level fine - bring it back if it does it again.

The brochure mentioned above is regarding the Prince N12/N14/N16/N18 engines, not the new BMW B38/B48/B46 engines.
