F55/F56 F56...Pretty or not?
F56...Pretty or not?
Well, there has been a lot of debate about the look of the F56. I for one, first time MINI owner, was drawn to the aesthetics of F56. On the other hand, the F56 got a lot of push back from MINI "enthusiasts". German car magazine 'Auto, Motor und Sport' voted the MINI F56 as the best looking car for 2014. I guess, beauty is indeed in the eyes of the beholder.
Ask people who own one and they'll think it looks fine.
Ask all fan-boys of the older Minis and they probably think it's ugly.
I don't think ours is "pretty" but I don't find it ugly, either. It looks like every other 2014 Mini.

I don't think MINI's are generally "pretty" cars, but they're not ugly either. They have distinctive style which is tasteful and refined.
(I think Toaster is cute, cute for a Cylon) he he he.

Lol I agree
Hahaha. My thoughts exactly...
Agree! And don't call it a chick car either! I'm an anyday-I'll-be-a-first-time-owner and was surprised when I learned of all the negative reactions to the new MINI by hard core owners of older models. They're all beautiful and original and clearly say "I'm a MINI." For the new ones, I much prefer the looks of the base model with the bad *** grill. It's retro and modern at the same time. Think they should do better by the S in future years. I don't think that honeycomb is up to the rest of the car.

I'm not a fan of the front end. I really had to fight with myself before ordering. I did so only because my daughter and son-in-law won the MINI Test Drive contest and put their stamp of approval on it. Having said that, I do think it's better looking in person. The Volcanic Orange that was used for the first photo ops seemed to have a surprised look that is not attractive to me. I do think it looks better in the darker colors, but I just couldn't find a dark color I wanted, now that it's not available in Chili Red.
Guess I'll just have to see if the front end grows on me when I'm sitting behind it. I'm hoping side graphics and bonnet/boot stripes will help.

It's a butterface.
There's a big gap between headlights and foglights. It's like someone grabbed its chin with one hand and forehead (where headlights are) with another and stretched them apart without filling the new created void in the middle with any detail. Those "scared fish" LED lights only make both looks much much worse. I'd never buy one with those lights.
The other problem is that stupid bottom chin on S models... lighter body colors makes it even worse. The S looks ok in black color because the "heaviness" of the chin is not accentuated so much.
Same story with the rear. That horizontal 8-shape tack-on (that looks exactly like a tack on with sharp edges that don't blend with the rest of the bumper) on the S make it look tall and awkward like Fiat 500... again, darker colors hide it better.
They nailed the rear end on both otherwise. Many people don't like bigger taillights, I think they're perfect, 1000x better than 1st and 2nd gen with their afterthought little smidgens. Never liked rear end on both prev gen Minis, but with the 3rd gen it's my fav part of the car to look at. Expressive and perfectly proportioned.
And yes that green lowered Justa above is smoking hot. But I saw stock green ones and they looked as weird as all the other ones. Photo angles make or break this car, latter more often than former, unfortunately.
But black S is still #1 on my new car shopping list. Yes the car is a butterface, but it's extremely appealing to me in all the other areas...

Everything about this car screams I'M A MINI!!! There is no possible way anyone would think this car is anything but a Mini. It is one of the most distinctive and unique car styles on the road today. Just like the VW Beetle, or the 911, there is no mistaking a Mini. I still have a hard time telling the R series apart from the F series. The differences are very subtle. But of course the car is going to evolve as every car does and as the R series is far evolved from the original Mini. But I'd bet if you put an original Mini owner in a time machine and brought them to 2014 and showed them an F56 there would be no doubt in their mind it was a Mini.
I realize people may be picky about minor details, but if you like the look of a Mini it is like pointing out the mole on Cindy Crawford's face and saying it makes her ugly. No way!

I would agree with you. That bumper really sucks. I cannot wait till there is a better front end for the car. I was hoping they remove the bumper and extend the grill. I think it would look fantastic like that.
I do personally prefer the base F56 grill, but I wanted the 'S'. I think with my British Racing Green paint the MCS grill looks better, even muscular. Bulldog muscular!
