F55/F56 roof rack question
F56 Roof Railing versus Base Support
That is the part number for the crossbars that attach to the roof rails. This part requires no special tools. It comes with the little wrench to secure the crossbars to the rails and the coded key to lock it into place so no one steals it. You would then purchase accessories (bike holder, ski holder, kayak carrier, roof box) to slide into the crossbars.
You cannot use this part WITHOUT the roof rails already in place

Thanks, I love photos.
Unfortunately, these roof rails were not an option when I ordered my car. I would prefer them to look like this photo. I feel it looks nicer with the car. Until then I will continue to wait and see how I can add some to mine as well as look at third party ones.

Do you have a six foot ladder that you could try and fit in the box? I would prefer a roof box to keep my ladder out of the weather, but judging by the dimensions on the few I've looked at, one wouldn't fit.
I'm guessing it would be cheaper to go ahead and get the roof rails when I order the car rather than wait and see if I need them and have them put on later? It sounds more expensive to add them after the fact - is that right?
It seems factory "add-ons" after delivery are about 4X more expensive
Ordering roof rails on the current hardtop $250
Dealer installed after delivery $1000+
Wise choice:
If you think you may need an option, order it from the factory.
Much cheaper and the installation will be by those specializing in that area.
This is especially true for items that require electrical connections.

Masteryoda, glucklich...
The Yakima instructions note 6 says: "At the specified measurements, insert a plastic card under the trim to locate the hidden slot."
How obvious or hidden is the slot and how much do you have to pull back on the trim with the plastic card to see it?
Thanks

Use a credit card. Or library card. It's pretty easy and obvious to find the slots. You just feel for it- can't see it. Once you've found it, pull the card back a bit to keep a gap in the rubber, and push the metal clamps in place. Oh, and do this with the doors cracked open so the window isn't putting pressure on the rubber.
I do have a concern that if you left the rack in place for a while, the rubber won't seal again once removed. Good motivation to for me to remove the rack immediately when I'm done with it! Is this an issue for other cars?

thanks JL!
as far as leaving the rack on goes... I had one car (two vehicles ago) that had a kinda similar rubber seal set up. I left my rack on that car full time for four years and never had a problem. I only took it off when I sold the car and I didn't hear about any issues with the new owner.
Oh, and one more question... are you by any chance using a wind fairing with yours? if so, does it clear the sunroof (if you have one)?
Good to know about the rubber!
I did buy a 38" fairing, after someone said the next size seemed to big. Well this one seems too small. Regardless, I doubt I'm ever going to use it. My main setup is a Yakima Loadwarrior on top. The other day I strapped a 6' ladder to that, and I noticed no noise at all on the freeway (75mph). If you were running only the bars- no idea. But with stuff on top of the bars, all is quiet.

My rubber when I first removed the racks after my trip was a little stretched out, but after leaving it in the sun for a few hours, it went back to shape against the body.
FYI. Torklift central offers a hitch that is well made and hidden. For me it's the preferred option since it's only noticeable when you use it and I can use a platform carrier and it's not on the roof or on the hatch. Doesn't impact fuel economy as much. Just sharing so you know you have options.
I've seen those on other mini's with someone similar. I'm really short so putting anything on top could be a challenge depending on weight.
Good to know, thanks!

Has anyone put a Yakima rack on a 2015? Does the 2015 still have the hidden pocket? I really can't seem to locate it. Am I looking between the hard plastic rain gutter and the soft rubber seal, or under the rubber seal?

I'm going to assume you aren't able to open the hatch with the platform loaded so I guess you'd have to be pretty strategic with your packing so that you could easily access the things you'd need along your trip. How do you keep your things on the platform? Would you bungee everything to the base? Does it hold as much as a roof rack would? Is there a weight limit?
The good news is on this generation it can be completely removed really easily in seconds similar to the Countryman. Unlock the 4 corners and it pops off the rails.
That sounds like a great alternative since I don't like the look of the roof rails. How much does that cost and how hard is it to install? Is it something I could install myself or do you have to get the dealer to do that? If the dealer has to install it, how much does that cost? Thanks to user spmahoney78 for telling me about the hitch! Next week my car goes to their shop to help them create an eco hitch for all 2014 and above justas.
If any of you out there are wanting one, give them a couple weeks and it should be available.
