Question about aftermarket wheels

Greetings! I probably missed this while researching the subject, but I was wondering what I need to do with the TPMS sensors if I buy a wheel and tire package from Tire Rack. Can the sensors on the original wheels be repurposed or do I get the sensors offered by Tire Rack for $140? Will they communicate the same with the module or will I be forever getting the little sign on my instrument panel? Thank you in advance.

If you are going to have just one set of wheels then move them to the new wheels.

I would double check on how the TPMS system works. In a lot of newer cars they've done away with a sending unit in each wheel. Instead, the system uses the ABS sensors to tell if one of the wheels is rotating at a different speed compared to the others, as a way of telling if there's a flat. Pretty sure most newer MINIs use they system now. All you have to do with your replacement wheels is recalibrate the system which can be done from the user menu.

Interesting - that's how the old R50/53 work (no TPMS sensor, just uses ABS sensor.)

OP's car uses TPMS, AFAIK MINIs 3rd gen continue with TPMS. I'm going to guess and say that Run Flat tires probably need TPMS and not ABS sensor methods.

TPMS sensors

I will venture a guess that I have the sensors, and I do have the run-flats. So then I can just reuse the old original sensors? However, as the wheel and tire package has the tires mounted and balanced, I suppose new sensors should be ordered and mounted already. That being said, I am understanding that new sensors will communicate with the module after a day or so and then no light on IP and it will tell me if pressure is low as designed? No issues with incompatibility?

Yes, you should have the new TPMS sensors installed at the time of tire mounting (i.e.- @ Tire Rack) if you are purchasing the set mounted/balanced. The folks at Tire Rack should also have TPMS sensors that are compatible with your car, which is why they would need to confirm the make/model of your vehicle. I would give them a call to discuss/confirm. Good luck.
