Nothing to do with Mini Connected, this is just Bluetooth stuff.
On your phone, after you have paired,
Go to Settings->General->Bluetooth, select the Mini, and then enable "Show Notifications".
It will only show messages that arrive while you are paired to the car. When it happens, you'll get an envelope icon in the top bar. Go to Office->Messages to read them.
